IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays few people ponder that at this time we have too numerous choices. I agree with this statement, this essay will tell you about choices in many things.

On the one hand, greater choice has made life more convenient and has allowed people to find products and services that suit their individual needs. For example, consumers can now compare thousands of items online, choose from various educational courses, and select jobs that match their abilities and interests. In the past, people often had to accept whatever was available locally. Therefore, increased choice can encourage competition, improve quality and give individuals more freedom.

On the other hand, too many alternatives can make decision-making difficult and stressful. When shopping online, for instance, a person may spend hours comparing similar phones, clothes or household products without becoming more confident about which one to buy. This phenomenon, sometimes called “choice overload”, can lead to dissatisfaction because people may constantly wonder whether another option would have been better. In addition, the abundance of entertainment choices, such as films, television programmes and social-media content, can waste time and make it harder for people to concentrate on meaningful activities.

The problem is particularly serious for young people, who must make numerous decisions about education, careers and lifestyles while being exposed to a large amount of information. Although this freedom is valuable, it can also create pressure to make the perfect choice.

In conclusion, I agree to a considerable extent that people today have too many choices. Variety is beneficial when it helps individuals meet their needs, but an excessive number of options can cause confusion, stress and regret. For this reason, people should focus on their priorities rather than trying to consider every available alternative.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the discussion on 'choice overload' and the impact on young people. You provide relevant examples, such as online shopping and entertainment, which support your arguments effectively. The conclusion reinforces your position well. To reach a higher band, ensure that the introduction is more formal; the opening sentence 'Nowadays few people ponder that at this time we have too numerous choices' is slightly awkward and unclear in its meaning. A more direct thesis statement would strengthen the opening.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the benefits and drawbacks of choice is smooth, using appropriate cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate. The flow of ideas is natural, and the reader can easily follow your argument from start to finish. To improve, ensure that the connection between sentences is always precise; some transitions are standard, but adding a wider variety of linking words could enhance the sophistication of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'individual needs', 'choice overload', and 'meaningful activities' effectively. The language is generally natural and appropriate for an academic essay. There are occasional minor inaccuracies, such as 'too numerous choices' in the introduction, which is not a standard collocation. However, these do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary, while ensuring they are used in the correct context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use complex sentences effectively, such as 'Although this freedom is valuable, it can also create pressure to make the perfect choice.' Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good. There are very few grammatical slips, and the meaning is always clear. To reach the highest bands, ensure that every sentence is grammatically polished; for example, the opening sentence is slightly clunky. Continued practice with varied sentence structures will help you maintain high accuracy throughout.
