Student answer (Band 7.5)

Some people believe that people nowadays have too many choices in their daily lives. I largely agree with this view because modern technology and increased consumer options have made decision-making more complicated, although having a wide range of choices can also provide important benefits.

One major reason why people have too many choices is the rapid development of technology. In the past, people usually had only a few options when purchasing products or services. Today, however, online shopping platforms provide thousands of products with different brands, prices and features. For example, when buying a mobile phone, a person may have to compare hundreds of models. As a result, choosing the most suitable product can be time-consuming and may cause stress or uncertainty.

Another area where choices have increased significantly is entertainment and lifestyle. People can now choose from countless movies, TV programmes, social media platforms, restaurants and travel destinations. Although this variety gives individuals greater freedom, it can also make them feel overwhelmed. For instance, someone who wants to watch a film on a streaming service may spend more time browsing through options than actually watching something. This phenomenon is sometimes referred to as “choice overload”.

Nevertheless, having more choices is not entirely negative. A wider range of options allows people to find products and services that better match their individual needs and preferences. For example, consumers with limited budgets can compare prices online and select affordable alternatives. Similarly, students can choose from numerous educational courses and universities according to their interests and career goals.

In conclusion, I agree to a large extent that modern society offers people too many choices. Although greater choice provides freedom and can improve the quality of decisions, an excessive number of options can create confusion, stress and wasted time. Therefore, people should learn to identify their priorities and limit their choices when necessary.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses the prompt by taking a clear position and supporting it with relevant arguments. You have balanced the discussion well, acknowledging the benefits of choice while maintaining your stance that it is often excessive. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the examples regarding mobile phone shopping and the 'choice overload' phenomenon in entertainment. The conclusion effectively synthesizes your points and provides a logical final thought. To reach a higher band, you could further extend the analysis by briefly discussing the psychological impact of this 'overload' on long-term decision-making satisfaction, but the current development is sufficient for a strong score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the negative aspects of choice and the counter-argument is smooth, using appropriate cohesive devices like 'Nevertheless' and 'Although'. Referencing is clear throughout, and the paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct points. The flow is natural, and the reader is guided through your argument without any confusion. The use of linking words is neither mechanical nor repetitive, which demonstrates a high level of control over the structure of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic context. Phrases such as 'rapid development of technology', 'individual needs and preferences', and 'excessive number of options' show a solid command of language. You also successfully incorporated the term 'choice overload', which is precise and relevant to the topic. The vocabulary is used naturally and accurately throughout the text. To improve further, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic academic expressions to add variety, but the current range is sufficient to convey your ideas with precision and clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., 'Although this variety gives individuals greater freedom, it can also make them feel overwhelmed'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is excellent. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The use of modal verbs and conditional structures is accurate. The writing is consistently fluent, and the grammatical accuracy is high, which supports the overall clarity of your argument.
