Student answer (Band 7.5)

Some people believe that people nowadays have too many choices in their daily lives. I largely agree with this view because, although having choices can be beneficial, an excessive number of options can create stress and make decision-making difficult.

On the one hand, having more choices gives people greater freedom and allows them to find products and services that suit their needs. For example, consumers can choose from hundreds of brands when buying clothes, phones or food. In my own experience, online shopping has made it easier to compare prices and find suitable products. Therefore, a wide range of choices can improve convenience and satisfaction.

On the other hand, too many options can have negative effects. When people are presented with a huge number of alternatives, they may spend too much time comparing them and become confused about which one is best. Moreover, the large number of choices available today can make people feel dissatisfied with their final decisions. They may constantly wonder whether another option would have been better, which can lead to regret and anxiety. For instance, when watching a movie on a streaming platform, I sometimes spend more time choosing a film than actually watching one. Similarly, students may struggle to select the most suitable course or study material from the many options available online.

In conclusion, I agree that modern society provides people with an excessive number of choices. Although this offers freedom and convenience, too many alternatives can cause confusion, stress and wasted time. Therefore, having a reasonable number of options is more beneficial than unlimited choice.

The arguments are well-developed, with the first body paragraph acknowledging the benefits of choice and the second body paragraph effectively detailing the drawbacks, such as decision fatigue and anxiety. The use of personal examples, such as the streaming platform scenario, adds depth and relevance to your argument. The conclusion provides a concise summary that reinforces your main stance. Overall, the response is well-structured and directly answers the question asked.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the benefits and drawbacks is smooth, facilitated by effective cohesive devices like 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover'. The use of referencing is accurate, and the flow of information is natural. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The logical flow ensures that the reader can easily follow your line of reasoning from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic context. Phrases such as 'excessive number of options', 'decision-making', 'dissatisfied with their final decisions', and 'regret and anxiety' show a solid command of topic-specific language. While the vocabulary is accurate and conveys your meaning clearly, it could be elevated further by incorporating more sophisticated or less common collocations to reach the highest band. However, the current range is sufficient to express your ideas with precision and flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'Although this offers freedom and convenience, too many alternatives can cause...'). The grammar is highly accurate, with very few, if any, errors. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and the sentence construction is varied, which keeps the writing engaging. The control over complex structures is consistent, and the overall clarity of the writing is excellent, reflecting a high level of grammatical competence.
