Student answer (Band 7.5)

In the modern world, people have access to an enormous range of choices in almost every aspect of their lives, from the products they buy to the careers they pursue. I largely agree with this statement because although having options provides greater freedom, an excessive number of choices can lead to confusion and make decision-making more difficult.

One reason why I believe people have too many choices is the rapid growth of consumer products and online services. For instance, when purchasing a smartphone, consumers can choose from numerous brands, models, features and price ranges. Similarly, online shopping platforms offer thousands of products for a single requirement. Although this variety allows people to find products that suit their individual needs, comparing a large number of alternatives can be time-consuming and confusing. As a result, people may struggle to make a decision or feel dissatisfied even after choosing a product.

Furthermore, excessive choices can create unnecessary pressure in important areas of life, particularly education and careers. Young people today can select from a wide range of university courses and professional careers. While this freedom creates more opportunities, it can also make individuals uncertain about which option is most suitable for their future. For example, a student may spend considerable time comparing different courses, universities and career paths before making a decision. Therefore, having too many alternatives does not always result in greater satisfaction and may instead lead to stress and indecision.

In conclusion, I agree that people nowadays are faced with too many choices. While a variety of options can provide freedom and better opportunities, an excessive number of alternatives can make decision-making complicated, time-consuming and stressful.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses the prompt by taking a clear position and supporting it with relevant arguments. The introduction establishes a clear stance, and the body paragraphs develop the ideas logically. The first body paragraph focuses on consumerism, while the second addresses the pressure of choice in education and careers. Both points are well-supported with specific examples, such as smartphone purchasing and university course selection. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points without introducing new information. The response is well-balanced and maintains a consistent focus on the prompt throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'In conclusion' effectively. Within paragraphs, the sentences flow well, and referencing is clear. The use of cohesive devices is natural and does not feel mechanical. The structure is logical, moving from a general statement to specific examples and then to a summary, which makes the argument easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses a range of topic-specific vocabulary such as 'consumer products', 'professional careers', and 'indecision'. While the vocabulary is accurate and conveys the intended meaning clearly, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would characterize a band 8 or 9 response. However, there are no significant errors in word choice or collocation, and the language is natural and precise enough to support the argument effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'While this freedom creates more opportunities, it can also make individuals uncertain about which option is most suitable for their future.' Punctuation is used correctly, and there are very few grammatical errors. The sentences are generally error-free, and the control over complex structures is consistent. The writing is clear and flows well, indicating a high level of grammatical accuracy.
