Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often argued that modern life offers an overwhelming number of choices. I completely agree with this statement because of the variety available in consumer products and career options, and I believe this can sometimes be stressful. Firstly, in our daily life we face too many choices while shopping. In the past, there were only a few brands for one product, but today supermarkets have hundreds of options. For example, if you want to buy toothpaste, there are more than 50 brands with different flavours , sizes and prices. Similarly, online shopping websites like Amazon show thousands of choices for just one item like a mobile phone. This makes decision-making very confusing and time-consuming. People often spend hours comparing products before buying. Secondly, we also have too many choices in our personal and professional life. Young people today have many career options like engineering, medicine, design, YouTubing, business, and studying abroad. While freedom is good, it also creates pressure. For instance, many students in India are confused after 12th class about which course to choose because there are so many options. This can lead to anxiety and fear of making the wrong decision. In the past, people had fewer options, so life was simpler and more focused .In conclusion, although having many choices gives us freedom, I agree that nowadays we have too many choices. This abundance can make our lives more complicated and stressful. Therefore, it is important to learn how to make decisions wisely and not get overwhelmed.

In conclusion, I believe that having limited but good choices is better than having countless options.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas regarding consumerism and career choices are relevant and well-supported with specific examples, such as the toothpaste variety and the pressure on students in India. The argument is logical and coherent. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more nuanced analysis of the 'why' behind the stress, perhaps exploring the psychological concept of 'choice paralysis' in greater depth. Overall, the response is well-developed and fully answers the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Similarly', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is appropriate, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the argument. However, the inclusion of two concluding sentences—one starting with 'In conclusion' and another starting with 'In conclusion' again—is slightly repetitive and disrupts the flow. Refining the transition between ideas would make the progression even smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for clear communication. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'consumer products', 'decision-making', and 'abundance'. While the range is adequate, it lacks the 'less common' or 'sophisticated' lexical items that characterize higher bands. Phrases like 'very confusing' or 'very stressful' are functional but basic. Incorporating more precise collocations or academic vocabulary would enhance the lexical profile. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choice is generally accurate throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally reliable. There are minor punctuation issues, such as the space before the period in 'focused .In' and the comma placement in 'flavours , sizes'. These are minor slips that do not impede communication. To improve, the student should aim for more varied complex structures, such as using conditional clauses or passive voice, to demonstrate a wider grammatical range. Overall, the control of grammar is strong and consistent.
