IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The answer is complex since there are a lot of choices in our life and all of them are different kinds. In some cases I wouid say that it is a good thing to have the ability to choose from a wide variety. Take for example gastronomy. Every single person has different meals on their list of favourites. Actually if you have a bigger family it is almost impossible to cook something that everyone would like. Therefore I would say that it is great that you can go to a shopping center and choose from a dozen different food types. I can always find something that looks delicious.
Naturally, there are some people who say that it is against evolution. They claim to say that back in the old days we had a perfect life when technically everybody was farming. I personally disagree with that. I am happy that I could choose a job that fits best to my abilities. I mean no one is the same, why would we want to do the same? Different kinds of universities give us the opportunity to beome who we are meant to be. We have the right to choose.
However there is one topic where, according to my opinion, we have too many choices. This specific area is television. There are hundreds of channels, therefore you can always find something that is worth watching. Literally you could sit in your sofa the whole day and watch films. I think that people doing leas outdoor activities are the results of the many available channels. From this point of view I would agree that we have too many choices.
In conclusion, I would say that we can't generaily talk about choices since they could be different. In some cases it is good to have many of them while in other areas they could have a negative effect.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the benefits and drawbacks of having many choices. You maintain a clear position throughout, acknowledging that while choice is beneficial in areas like career and food, it can be excessive in others like television. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding television leading to fewer outdoor activities is a good point, but it could have been expanded with more depth or a specific example. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting arguments are more thoroughly explored rather than just stated.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'However', and 'In conclusion' to link your ideas. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more sophisticated. For example, the phrase 'I mean no one is the same' is a bit informal and disrupts the flow of the argument. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between your supporting points would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'gastronomy', 'evolution', and 'opportunity' correctly. However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and repetitive in places. There are also minor issues with word choice, such as 'technically everybody was farming' and 'sit in your sofa', which should be 'on your sofa'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid informal phrasing like 'I mean' or 'a lot of'. Expanding your range of synonyms will help you express your ideas with greater precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I wouid say' (typo), 'beome' (typo), and 'people doing leas outdoor activities are the results' (subject-verb agreement/awkward phrasing). Additionally, some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'They claim to say that back in the old days'. To achieve a higher score, focus on eliminating these small errors and increasing the variety of complex grammatical structures, such as using more conditional or passive forms.
