Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often believed that modern society offers people too many choices. I completely agree with this view because the abundance of options can make decision-making more difficult and increase stress.

One major reason why I agree with this view is that consumers nowadays have an overwhelming number of products and services to choose from. Online shopping and global markets provide countless alternatives for people. As a result, individuals often have to spend considerable time comparing similar products in terms of price, quality and features before making a decision. Moreover, they sometimes get confused when they have to select from a wide variety of goods. For example, when purchasing a new smartphone, buyers may struggle to choose between an iPhone and a Samsung device because both offer a wide range of features and advantages. This can also take up a significant amount of their time.

Another area in which people face an excessive number of choices is education and career development. Many universities offer similar degree programmes, which may cause students to struggle to identify the most suitable option. In addition, people can now access a wider range of online courses, pursue different fields of study and choose from more career paths than in the past. Consequently, they may constantly compare different possibilities and find it difficult to choose the most suitable option. This situation can cause stress and uncertainty for individuals. For example, students who are interested in both engineering and medicine may struggle to decide which career path to pursue, particularly when both fields offer attractive opportunities.

In conclusion, having too many choices can provide great freedom but it can also make decision-making more difficult and lead to stress and uncertainty.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have clearly addressed the prompt by taking a firm position and supporting it with relevant examples. The essay is well-structured, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct area (consumerism and education/career) to support your argument. The ideas are extended logically, and the conclusion effectively summarises your stance. To reach a higher band, ensure that your examples are slightly more analytical; for instance, instead of just mentioning the struggle between two brands, you could briefly explain the psychological impact of 'choice overload' or 'analysis paralysis' to add more depth to your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical progression. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the transition between the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion is smooth. You have used a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'One major reason', 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'Consequently'. The paragraphing is logical and helps the reader follow your argument without difficulty. The flow is natural, and the relationship between ideas is consistently clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas with precision. Phrases like 'abundance of options', 'overwhelming number', 'career development', and 'uncertainty' are used appropriately. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, it is generally standard. To move into the higher bands, try to incorporate more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations, such as 'paradox of choice' or 'dilemma of selection', which would demonstrate a more flexible and academic command of the English language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your grammar is strong, and the essay is largely free of errors. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'One major reason why I agree with this view is that consumers nowadays have an overwhelming number of products...' and '...when purchasing a new smartphone, buyers may struggle to choose...'. Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The control over complex structures is consistent, which is a hallmark of a high-scoring response.
