IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is often argued that by many people that at present we have numerous options and I completely agree with this statement, because there is an increased global connection promoting a wide range of production of goods and easier access to internet.
One of the major reasons for having various choices now is the globalization. It increased export and import of domestic products to international markets, which promoted many new products and services to other countries. Consequently, people have more options in every type of services or commodities now than they had before. For example, Bangladesh does not produce products like Oat meals domestically. However, people got exposure to multiple brands of oat meals presently because of globalization.
Another significant reason is the convenience that internet provides. People are now exposed to various information and trends through online platforms. As a result, they get to know of the alternative options of any service or good very quickly and might get influenced to try them. For instance, if a product is not available on one website, people can search any sites to find it along with hundred alternative options. However, sometimes it can be overwhelming at times of emergency or dilemma. Moreover, product quality varies significantly, which can be confusing for many if they do not know much about the ingredients of a product.
In conclusion, I firmly agree that people possess too many options nowadays. Even though it can be confusing for consumers sometimes, globalization through business and product/ service exchange increased selling of multiple items that are not commonly found otherwise and easier access to internet are the major reasons behind it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The ideas regarding globalization and internet convenience are relevant and supported with examples, such as the availability of oat meals in Bangladesh. However, the development is somewhat limited; while the points are clear, they could be extended further to reach a higher band. The conclusion summarizes the main points effectively, though it repeats some phrasing from the introduction. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task well, providing a clear argument supported by logical reasoning.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'consequently', 'for instance', and 'moreover' are used to link ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments. However, there are minor issues with flow; for example, the opening sentence is slightly clunky due to redundant phrasing ('It is often argued that by many people'). Despite this, the progression of ideas is clear, and the reader can easily follow the writer's line of reasoning throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The writer uses terms like 'globalization', 'commodities', and 'dilemma' correctly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'production of goods' and 'search any sites'. While the range is adequate to convey meaning precisely, it lacks the more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations that would characterize a higher band. Spelling is accurate throughout, and the vocabulary choice is consistent with the academic tone required for this task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'It is often argued that by many people' (redundant preposition) and 'access to internet' (missing article). Additionally, 'at times of emergency or dilemma' is slightly awkward. However, these errors do not impede communication. The writer shows an ability to use complex structures, such as conditional sentences ('if a product is not available...'), though control is not entirely consistent. The majority of the sentences are clear and understandable.
