IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
It is often argued that people have too many choices nowadays. I completely agree with this statement because globalization has increased the availability of products from around the world, while the internet has made it easier to access a wide range of alternatives.
One of the major reasons why people have more choices nowadays is globalization. It has increased the export and import of products between countries, making a wider range of goods and services available in international markets. Consequently, people now have more choices than they did in the past. For example, Bangladesh does not produce many brands of oatmeal domestically. However, consumers can now choose from several international brands because of global trade.
Another significant reason is the convenience provided by the internet. People are now exposed to a wide range of information and trends through online platforms. As a result, they can quickly become aware of alternative products and services and may be influenced to try them. For instance, if a product is not available on one website, people can search other websites and find hundreds of alternative options. However, having too many choices can sometimes be overwhelming, particularly when people have to make decisions quickly. Moreover, differences in product quality can make it difficult for consumers to decide which option is best, especially if they do not know much about the products or their ingredients.
In conclusion, I firmly agree that people have too many choices nowadays. Although this can sometimes be confusing for consumers, globalization and easier access to the internet have significantly increased the number of products and services available to them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of oatmeal brands in Bangladesh and the role of online platforms. The argument is well-developed, though it could be further strengthened by exploring the 'too many' aspect more deeply—specifically, why this abundance is perceived as a negative rather than just a neutral fact. Overall, the response is focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'Consequently,' 'For example,' and 'Another significant reason,' which help guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the relationship between the causes (globalization/internet) and the effects (increased choice/overwhelming feelings) is clearly articulated throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses relevant terms such as 'globalization,' 'international markets,' 'online platforms,' and 'overwhelming.' While the range is adequate, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations that would push the score into the 8.0 range. However, the word choice is precise, and there are no errors that impede communication. The student demonstrates a good grasp of topic-specific vocabulary related to trade and consumer behavior.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. For example, the use of conditional structures ('if a product is not available...') and complex sentences ('Although this can sometimes be confusing...') shows a good command of syntax. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. While the range of structures is solid, incorporating a wider variety of advanced grammatical forms, such as passive voice or inversion, could further enhance the complexity of the writing.
