Student answer (Band 5.5)

In this contemporary world, it is firmly believed that people have several options for living. I partially agree with the given statement that people nowadays have many sources, knowledge and other facilities but i also hold the stance that with the advancement of new technology several challenges have also been emerging out.

To begin with, due to development in several aspects of our lifestyle, people have countless preferences regarding their knowledge, communication and sources. In past era, education system was not fully developed , there was hardly one or two academic platforms for children to learn new skills, but in modern era plenty of schools and colleges are now opened for coming generation.Similarly, people have numerous facilities for living a luxurious life. Today, modern technology has worked a lot in transport .For example, people have abundant choices for travelling within a country such as bus, car , train or aeroplane. In communication technology, now humans have a large number of digital devices to communicate their loved ones living within a country or abroad. To illustrate, a large number of applications are serving for people in communication such as Whatsapp, Instagram , Imo and many more.

On the other hand, due to progress in many aspects of life , many challenges are also increased with the passage of time.Meanwhile, due to excessive transport pollution has also increased during this time period, due to which people are now facing many issues regarding their health. To illustrate, respiratory diseases like asthma has now increased in urban areas due to smoke emerging out from transport vehicles.Similarly, advancement in communication, scam or false information also spread in seconds which may affect the mental health of humans.

To conclude, in my perspective, in this modern age, people often have numerous alternatives for their living but also face many problems owing to this progress but if they use properly, it may have more benefits than drawbacks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a partial stance. The ideas are relevant, focusing on education, transport, and communication as examples of increased choice. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the benefits of choice are well-illustrated, the counter-argument regarding the negative consequences of progress (pollution and misinformation) is less directly linked to the concept of 'too many choices' and more to the general impact of technology. To reach a higher band, the connection between the 'abundance of choice' and the resulting 'challenges' needs to be more explicitly articulated to ensure the argument remains focused on the prompt's core premise throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Similarly', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as the phrase 'due to progress in many aspects of life' which repeats the previous paragraph's logic without adding depth. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words beyond simple additive connectors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'luxurious life', 'respiratory diseases', and 'digital devices'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural collocation or word choice, such as 'emerging out' instead of 'emerging' or 'communicate their loved ones' instead of 'communicate with their loved ones'. To improve, the student should focus on more precise collocations and a wider range of academic vocabulary to convey ideas with greater sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Common issues include missing articles (e.g., 'In past era'), incorrect preposition usage (e.g., 'communicate their loved ones'), and subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'many challenges are also increased'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Increasing the accuracy of complex structures and refining basic grammar will be key to improvement.
