Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the recent years, it has been argued that people in contemporary era have more options in terms of making decisions regarding their careers, relationships, lifestyles and other personal matters. I firmly agree with this assertion as the rapid innovation and integration of technology in our daily lives has dramatically transformed our way of thinking.

Before modern technology was introduced, people had only limited options to improve their way of living. They had to rely on the guidance they would get from their parents and elderly which would have shaped their way of contemplating, making them to choose from limited choices. For example, if a person was born in to a family of teachers, they would ultimately choose teaching as their profession. This was due to the limited range of perspectives they had perceived from their elders.

However, with innovations in technology, communication became more convenient. People got awareness about a wide range of career related fields, owing to the massive invents in technology like newspaper, television, smartphones and wifi. It broadened their perspectives about various lifestyles and how they can work to achieve them. Moreover, with social media becoming ubiquitous, young people are now more open to alternate ways of earnings. For instance, many youngsters now a days earn through online businesses by simply sitting at home without having to commute to workplaces far from their home. So they do not need to specialize in traditional professional fields like medical or engineering to ensure a reasonable lifestyle.

To conclude, the pervasive reach of innovative and modern tools on a global level has made people more educated about various decisions related to their lives and how they can be beneficial for them in certain ways.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. You have identified the core issue—the impact of technology on decision-making—and supported it with relevant examples, such as the shift from traditional career paths to online entrepreneurship. The ideas are well-developed, though the conclusion is somewhat brief and could have been used to more effectively synthesize the main points. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are fully explored; for instance, you could briefly acknowledge the potential downside of 'choice overload' to provide a more balanced and nuanced discussion, which would demonstrate a deeper engagement with the complexity of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'For instance' to guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the historical context from the modern technological impact. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is always explicit. The referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in sentence-to-sentence cohesion would elevate the overall readability.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'contemporary era', 'ubiquitous', and 'integration of technology' are used effectively. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'massive invents' (should be 'massive inventions' or 'advancements') and 'alternate ways of earnings' (should be 'alternative ways of earning'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the score. To reach a higher band, focus on using less common lexical items more accurately and refining your collocations to sound more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You demonstrate control over complex sentences, such as 'Before modern technology was introduced, people had only limited options to improve their way of living.' However, there are several grammatical slips, including 'In the recent years' (should be 'In recent years'), 'born in to' (should be 'born into'), and 'youngsters now a days' (should be 'nowadays'). While these errors are frequent, they rarely impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage, prepositional phrases, and common compound word spellings to increase the number of error-free sentences.
