Student answer (Band 7.5)
### Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Nowadays, people have more choices than ever before in almost every area of life. Although having a wide range of options can be beneficial, I believe that too many choices can sometimes create confusion and make decision-making more difficult.
On the one hand, having many choices provides people with greater freedom and convenience. In the past, consumers had limited options when buying products, choosing jobs or studying. However, today people can compare hundreds of products and services online before making a decision. For example, when purchasing a mobile phone, a person can compare different brands, prices and features on the internet. This allows consumers to find something that better suits their needs and budget. Similarly, students can choose from a wide range of universities and courses, which can help them select an education that matches their interests and career goals.
On the other hand, an excessive number of choices can make people feel confused and dissatisfied. When there are too many alternatives, it can become difficult to decide which one is the best. For instance, when people use streaming platforms, they may spend a long time choosing a film rather than actually watching one. In addition, people may regret their decisions because they constantly wonder whether another option would have been better. This can cause unnecessary stress and dissatisfaction.
In conclusion, I partly agree that people nowadays have too many choices. While a wide range of options gives individuals more freedom and can help them make better decisions, an excessive number of alternatives can also lead to confusion and stress. Therefore, people should focus on their priorities and select the option that best meets their needs.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task. You have taken a clear position from the introduction, which is maintained throughout the essay. The arguments are well-developed, with specific examples provided for both the benefits (e.g., comparing products online) and the drawbacks (e.g., streaming platforms) of having too many choices. The ideas are extended logically, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes your position. To reach a higher band, you could further explore the psychological impact of 'choice overload' in more depth, but the current level of development is sufficient for a strong score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the benefits and drawbacks is smooth, using appropriate cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is clear, and the use of linking words like 'Similarly', 'In addition', and 'Therefore' is natural. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the argument. The flow of information is consistent, making the essay very easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'excessive number of choices', 'constantly wonder', and 'unnecessary stress' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is appropriate and conveys your meaning clearly, it is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To move into the higher bands, you could incorporate more nuanced collocations or less common lexical items related to consumer behavior or decision-making psychology. However, there are no errors in word choice that impede communication, and the tone remains appropriately academic throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good variety of complex structures, such as conditional-like constructions ('when purchasing a mobile phone, a person can...') and subordinate clauses ('which can help them select...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is excellent. There are no significant grammatical errors that hinder the reader's understanding. The sentence structures are varied, moving between simple and complex forms effectively. The writing is accurate and demonstrates a solid command of English grammar, fitting well within the criteria for a high band.
