Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays, people have many choices in different areas of life. For example, they can choose from a wide range of products, jobs, education and entertainment. Some people believe that we have too many choices these days. I partly agree with this opinion because having many options can sometimes be confusing, but it also gives people more freedom.

On the one hand, I agree that there are too many choices in some situations. When people want to buy something, they can find hundreds of different products in shops and online. For example, there are many types of mobile phones with different prices, sizes and features. It can take a lot of time to decide which one is the best. In addition, people may feel unhappy after making a choice because they may think that another product was better. Therefore, having too many options can sometimes make simple decisions difficult.

On the other hand, I believe that having many choices also has important advantages. People have different needs and interests, so they can choose what is suitable for them. For instance, students today can choose from many universities and courses in different countries. They can select a subject according to their interests and future career plans. Also, customers can compare different products and prices before buying something. This can help them find better quality products at a reasonable price.

In conclusion, I partly agree that nowadays we have too many choices. Although a large number of options can make decisions more difficult, they also give people greater freedom and more opportunities. Therefore, I believe that having more choices is generally beneficial if people make their decisions carefully.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a balanced position in the introduction. The ideas are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as the comparison of mobile phone features and the accessibility of international education. The argument is developed logically, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the 'too many choices' debate. The conclusion effectively synthesizes the arguments presented. To reach a higher band, the student could explore the psychological impact of choice (e.g., the 'paradox of choice') in more depth to provide a more sophisticated analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the transition between the two sides of the argument is smooth, using cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate. The flow of information is natural, and the reader can easily follow the writer's line of reasoning. To improve, the student could use a wider variety of cohesive devices to link sentences more fluidly, as some transitions are currently quite standard.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for clear communication. The student uses relevant topic-specific vocabulary such as 'features', 'interests', 'career plans', and 'reasonable price'. While the range is adequate, it is somewhat functional rather than sophisticated. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation, but the essay lacks a range of less common lexical items or idiomatic expressions that would demonstrate a higher level of control. Incorporating more precise academic vocabulary would enhance the overall quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors that impede communication. Examples of complex structures include conditional-like constructions ('If people make their decisions carefully') and relative clauses. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. While the writing is clear and mostly error-free, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited. To achieve a higher score, the student should aim to incorporate a greater variety of advanced grammatical forms, such as passive voice or more complex subordinate clauses, with consistent accuracy.
