Student answer (Band 7.0)

h only marginal differences, leading them to second guess their eventual selection long after the purchase has been made. This phenomenon, often referred to as "choice overload", demonstrates that abundance rather than empowering consumers can leave them feeling anxious Many individuals believe that the modern world offers an excessive number of choices, spanning everything including major life decisions such as career and education. I completely agree with this assertion, as the constant need to evaluate countless alternatives not only overwhelms individuals psychologically but also undermines the quality of the decisions they ultimately make.

To begin with, an excessive number of options can generate considerable psychological strain, as the human mind is not naturally equipped to process vast quantities of information simultaneously. When people are confronted with dozens of near-identical alternatives, they are forced to expand significant cognitive energy comparing features, prices and potential outcomes, which frequently results in stress and fatigue rather than satisfaction. For instance, a shopper browsing an online marketplace for a single product such as a laptop, may encounter hundreds of similar models witand dissatisfied.

Furthermore, having too many choices paradoxically diminish the quality of decisions themselves, since an overload of options often cause individuals to rely on superficial criteria rather than careful analysis. When faced with an unmanageable number of alternatives, people tend to make hasty judgement based on limited factors, such as price and packaging, instead of thoroughly evaluating what would genuinely serve their needs. A clear illustration of this can be seen in job-seeking platforms , where the sheer volume of available positions may prompt applicants to apply indiscriminately rather than researching and pursuing roles aligned with their actual skills and career goals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response clearly addresses the prompt and maintains a consistent position throughout. The introduction effectively sets the stage, and the body paragraphs provide relevant, well-developed arguments regarding psychological strain and decision quality. The examples provided, such as online shopping and job-seeking platforms, are pertinent and support the main ideas well. The response is fully developed, and the argument is logical and coherent. There is a minor issue with the text structure at the beginning, where the first sentence appears to be a fragment or a carry-over from a previous draft, but the overall task response is strong and meets the requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the topic, and cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'For instance', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to link ideas. However, the opening sentence of the essay is disjointed and appears to be missing its subject, which disrupts the flow at the very start. Despite this, the internal structure of the paragraphs is sound, and the relationship between ideas is clear. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion (though a formal conclusion is missing, the final paragraph serves this purpose).

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a good range of vocabulary, using terms such as 'psychological strain', 'superficial criteria', 'indiscriminately', and 'paradoxically' with precision. This shows an ability to use less common lexical items effectively. There are some minor errors, such as 'expand significant cognitive energy' (should be 'expend') and 'hasty judgement' (should be 'judgments'), but these do not impede communication. The vocabulary is generally well-suited to the academic tone of the task, and the student shows a good awareness of collocation and style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay uses a variety of complex sentence structures, such as 'When people are confronted with dozens of near-identical alternatives, they are forced to...'. While there are some grammatical slips, such as 'options often cause' (subject-verb agreement error) and the aforementioned sentence fragment at the start, the majority of the sentences are error-free. The control of punctuation is generally good, and the complex structures are used with reasonable accuracy. The errors present are non-systematic and do not cause difficulty for the reader, fitting the criteria for a band 7.
