Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's globalized world, people are faced with a large number of options in almost every aspect of life. While I agree that there are more choices available than in the past, I do not believe that we have "too many" choices.

One reason people feel there are too many choices is the pressure it creates. For instance, in Education, students today can choose from hundreds of degrees, online courses, and universities worldwide. This can cause confusion and anxiety because making the wrong choice feels like a big risk. Similarly, in Dressing and Cuisine, social media exposes us to thousands of brands and food options. People often spend hours deciding what to wear or what to eat, which can be stressful and time consuming.

However, having more choices also brings many benefits. A wide range of Education options means people can find courses that suit their specific career goals and learning style. In terms of Language, the internet gives us access to learn any language for free, which was not possible 30 years ago. This allows for personal growth and better job opportunities. More choices in Cuisine also mean we can follow specific diets for health or cultural reasons and you can avail every kind of thing you want in your life with extreme number of choices in everything.

In conclusion, although having too many choices can sometimes lead to confusion and stress, I largely disagree with the idea that it is a negative thing. The variety available today empowers people to make decisions that better fit their individual needs and preferences.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that disagrees with the idea that there are 'too many' choices. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples such as education and cuisine. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The second paragraph introduces the pressure of choice well, but the third paragraph, while providing benefits, ends with a slightly vague and repetitive sentence ('you can avail every kind of thing you want in your life with extreme number of choices'). To reach a higher band, ensure that every supporting point is fully explored with specific, logical reasoning rather than generalizations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'For instance', 'Similarly', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the counter-argument from the writer's own perspective. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, though the transition between the benefits of education and the final sentence of the third paragraph feels slightly disjointed due to the shift in tone and clarity. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate and appropriate for the task. The writer uses topic-specific terms like 'globalized world', 'career goals', and 'personal growth'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'Dressing and Cuisine' (which should be 'fashion and food') and 'avail every kind of thing'. While the range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precise collocation required for higher bands. The use of vocabulary is functional but rarely ventures into more advanced or idiomatic territory.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear, and the meaning is never in doubt. There are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as the capitalization of 'Education', 'Dressing', and 'Cuisine' in the middle of sentences, and the slightly awkward phrasing in the final sentence of the third paragraph. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The control over punctuation is generally good, and the sentence variety is sufficient for a solid band 6.5 performance.
