Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays, people have more choices than ever before in many areas of their lives. They can choose from a wide range of products, jobs, entertainment and services. I agree that we have too many choices nowadays because having excessive options can make decision-making difficult and can sometimes create stress.
One reason I agree is that there are too many choices when people go shopping. In the past, consumers had fewer brands and products to choose from, whereas today there are thousands of options available in supermarkets and online stores. As a result, people often spend a lot of time comparing prices, quality and features before making a decision. For example, when buying a mobile phone, a customer may have to compare dozens of different models, which can make the process confusing and time-consuming.
Another reason is that modern technology has provided people with a huge number of entertainment and lifestyle choices. There are many streaming platforms, social media websites, restaurants, travel destinations and career options available. Although having more freedom can be beneficial, too many options may make people feel confused or dissatisfied with their decisions. For instance, someone using several streaming services may spend more time choosing a film than actually watching one.
However, having many choices also has some advantages. People can select products and services that better match their personal needs, preferences and budgets. For example, online shopping allows consumers to compare different products and choose the most suitable one.
In conclusion, I agree that people have too many choices nowadays. Although greater choice gives people more freedom and convenience, excessive options can lead to confusion, wasted time and unnecessary stress.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student addresses all parts of the task by clearly presenting a position on whether we have too many choices nowadays. The viewpoint is maintained throughout the response. Ideas are well supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as comparing mobile phone models and discussing streaming service choices. While the counter-argument is briefly touched upon in paragraph four, it is appropriately integrated to strengthen the overall discussion. The response satisfies the requirements of Band 7 by addressing all parts of the task with a clear position and well-extended ideas, though further depth in exploring the societal implications could have pushed the score higher.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with a clear introduction, followed by body paragraphs with specific supporting arguments, and ending with a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively to connect ideas, such as 'One reason I agree', 'Another reason is', and 'For instance'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different facets of the argument, ensuring that the overall arrangement remains coherent and easy to follow. The progression of thought is smooth, matching the Band 7 descriptor for clear logical organisation and flexible use of cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'excessive options', 'decision-making', 'time-consuming', and 'streaming platforms' indicate an adequate and appropriate command of topic-specific language. There are attempts to use less common items, and word choices are generally accurate. Spelling and word formation are correct throughout the text. While the vocabulary is not fully sophisticated enough for a higher band, it comfortably meets the criteria for Band 7 by providing a sufficient lexical range for clear and precise communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over grammar and punctuation. The student successfully incorporates complex structures, such as concessive clauses ('Although having more freedom can be beneficial, too many options may make people feel confused...') and conditional or relative clauses. The majority of sentences are error-free, and minor errors are absent. Punctuation is used correctly to demarcate clauses and list items. This performance aligns well with Band 7 descriptors, reflecting a variety of complex structures and frequent error-free sentences with good grammatical control.
