Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the rapidly changing world, there are varieties of options available for people in various categories. The world is undergoing rapid development and thus resulting in introduction of numerous options for every minute thing. In my opinion, i strongly agree to the view that people have too many choices available in today's time.

To begin with, accessibility to several options is extremely beneficial for every individual. More choices can help to compare with each other and can be useful to choose the best one out of all. For example, many students do thorough research about various available career options in their field of interest and opts for the most suitable one based on different criterias. Thus, availability of multiple choices is fruitful to eliminate unwanted options and helps in widening the spectrum of ideas.

In contrast, many people contend that options are limited nowadays. There are few categories which do not provide a wide range of options such as availability of job opportunities, especially in medical fields. For instance, there are numerous medical students who have graduated, but they do not have enough job opportunities available in the market. Most of the medical practitioners have limited choices, either working in a hospital or establishing a clinic, thus this results in unemployment at a larger scale.

To conclude, although, availability of multiple options might create confusion, but they help in comparing and eliminating unwanted options. Therefore, it is evident that nowadays people have too many choices and it is fruitful to make right decisions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt directly by taking a clear position that we do have too many choices nowadays. The main body paragraphs explore both sides of the issue, acknowledging the benefits of accessibility to options before presenting counterarguments regarding limited choices in specific fields like medicine. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the example regarding medical students touches on unemployment but lacks deeper extension. The writer maintains a consistent stance throughout, supporting ideas with general examples such as students researching career paths. This performance aligns well with Band 6.5 or 7.0 descriptors, specifically Band 6.0 as all parts are addressed though certain arguments remain somewhat limited in development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a clear focus, moving from an introduction and stance to supportive arguments, counterarguments, and a conclusion. Transitional markers such as 'To begin with', 'In contrast', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader through the text, although they occasionally feel somewhat mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Referencing is generally clear, though minor cohesive slips occur, such as the pronoun mismatch in the conclusion where 'they' refers back to 'availability of multiple options' rather than seamlessly bridging the ideas. Overall, the organizational structure is effective and meets the requirements of Band 6.5, leaning towards a solid Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'accessibility', 'thorough research', 'fruitful', and 'unemployment at a larger scale'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as writing 'varieties of options' instead of 'a variety of options', 'every minute thing', and 'opts for' (which has a subject-verb agreement issue with 'students... opts'). Additionally, 'criterias' is a non-standard plural form of criteria. While these lexical errors do not impede communication, they restrict the score to Band 6.0, as the vocabulary range is sufficient yet contains recurring inaccuracies in word formation and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay incorporates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as in 'many students do thorough research about various available career options in their field of interest and opts for the most suitable one'. However, grammatical control is inconsistent. There is a capitalization error in 'i strongly agree', a subject-verb agreement error ('students... opts'), and a pluralization error ('different criterias'). Punctuation is also slightly flawed in the concluding sentence with a comma splice before 'but they help'. Despite these errors, the structures are generally understandable and communication is not impeded. This performance corresponds to a Band 6.0, characterized by a mix of sentence types alongside persistent errors in grammar.
