Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, people have many choices in different areas of life, such as shopping, education, jobs and entertainment. Some people believe that having too many choices can make life more difficult. I agree with this opinion to a large extent, although having more choices also has some advantages.

On the one hand, having many choices can be useful for people. In the past, people had fewer products and services to choose from, but today they can compare many different options. For example, when buying a mobile phone, a person can choose from many brands and prices. This allows people to find something that is suitable for their needs and budget. In addition, young people now have many choices when deciding what to study or which career to follow. Therefore, having different options can give people more freedom.

On the other hand, too many choices can sometimes cause stress and confusion. When people have a large number of options, it can be difficult to decide which one is the best. For instance, when shopping online, people may spend a lot of time comparing similar products. They may also worry that they have made the wrong decision after buying something. Another problem is that young people can feel confused about their future because there are so many career choices available. As a result, they may find it difficult to choose one direction and stay with it.

In conclusion, I agree that people nowadays have too many choices in some areas of life. Although this gives us greater freedom, it can also create confusion and stress. Therefore, having a balanced number of choices is probably the best situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task clearly by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of having many choices, while maintaining a clear position that they agree with the statement to a large extent. The introduction outlines the writer's stance, and both body paragraphs present relevant ideas that are extended and supported with suitable examples, such as comparing mobile phone shopping and career choices for young people. The ideas are well-developed and directly relevant to the prompt, showing a solid understanding of the academic task 2 requirements. This performance aligns comfortably with Band 7 descriptors, as the prompt is fully addressed with a clear position and well-supported arguments throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with a clear introduction, moving through balanced body paragraphs marked by standard cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand', and concluding with a concise summary. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each new idea or perspective given its own section. The logical flow is maintained from start to finish, reflecting the characteristics of a Band 7 performance in coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate and sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-related terminology such as 'products and services', 'budget', 'career choices', and 'stress and confusion'. There are attempts to use slightly less common items, and the word choices are generally natural and precise enough to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding communication. While the lexical range lacks the more sophisticated and flexible phrasing typical of higher bands, it comfortably meets the criteria for Band 6.0 by providing a sufficient range of vocabulary that serves the task well despite occasional predictable collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating dependent clauses and conditional structures naturally (e.g., 'When people have a large number of options, it can be difficult to decide...'). Grammar and punctuation are generally well-controlled, and while there are minor limitations in syntactic variety, the sentences are largely accurate. Errors are very infrequent and do not impede communication at all. The control of complex structures and frequent error-free sentences place this response securely at Band 7 for grammatical range and accuracy.
