Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt directly, presenting a clear position agreeing that people have too many choices nowadays. The writer explores relevant areas such as food, clothing, and jobs, providing examples from their own knowledge to support these ideas. However, the development of ideas tends to be repetitive and somewhat generalized, relying on simple assertions rather than deep elaboration. For instance, the discussion on food and clothing covers similar ground regarding personal preference and lifestyle variety without pushing the argument further. This positions the task achievement firmly at Band 6, as all parts of the task are addressed with relevant ideas, but some areas remain under-developed or simplistic in their progression.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct topics like food, clothing, and employment. However, cohesive devices are sometimes faulty, mechanical, or repetitively used, such as starting multiple sentences and paragraphs with 'Furthermore,' 'Moreover,' and 'Similarly.' Referencing is also occasionally unclear, leading to minor disruptions in the logical flow. While the progression of ideas is generally understandable, the mechanical nature of the transitional phrases prevents the essay from reaching a higher band, making Band 6 an accurate reflection of the coherence and cohesion descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'copious,' 'amenities,' and 'capability.' However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'unlimitied' instead of 'unlimited,' 'formost' instead of 'foremost,' 'orded' instead of 'ordered,' and 'varity' instead of 'variety.' Additionally, collocation errors occur, such as 'wear clothes that suits on them' instead of 'suit them.' Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without severely impeding communication, fitting comfortably within the Band 5.5 to 6 range, evaluated here as Band 6.0 based on positive achievement.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over sentence structures. However, frequent grammatical and punctuation errors are present, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'hotels that offers' and 'individuals works,' missing articles, and preposition errors such as 'work from home of in company.' Punctuation is also weak, with a missing full stop in the third paragraph. While these errors occur frequently and affect the overall accuracy of the writing, they rarely impede the reader's ability to understand the main points. This profile aligns well with the Band 5.5 or Band 6 descriptors, reflecting a mix of structures alongside noticeable error frequency.
