Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays, people have more choices than ever before, whether in terms of food, education, careers, or entertainment. Some people believe that having so many options makes life more difficult. I agree with this view because an excessive number of choices can create confusion and stress.
Firstly, having too many options can make it difficult for people to make decisions. For example, when shopping online, customers may find hundreds of similar products with different prices, brands, and features. Comparing all these choices can take a considerable amount of time and may make people worried about making the wrong decision. As a result, instead of feeling satisfied, they may regret their final choice.
Secondly, an abundance of choices can negatively affect people's mental well-being. Young people, in particular, have numerous options regarding their education and future careers. Although this freedom can be beneficial, it can also create pressure because they may fear choosing the wrong path. In the past, people generally had fewer alternatives, so making important decisions could be relatively straightforward.
However, having a wide range of choices also has some advantages. People can select products, services, and careers that better suit their personal needs and interests. For instance, the internet allows students to choose from many online courses and educational resources, which can improve their learning opportunities.
In conclusion, although having many choices provides greater freedom and opportunities, I believe that too many options can cause confusion, stress, and dissatisfaction. Therefore, people should focus on their priorities and carefully consider the most suitable alternatives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student covers all parts of the task well, presenting a clear position throughout the essay. The response begins by agreeing with the statement and maintains this stance consistently to the conclusion. Main ideas are relevant, well-chosen, and supported with appropriate explanations, such as online shopping examples and the pressure faced by young people regarding education and careers. The student also acknowledges the opposing view by mentioning the advantages of having choices, which demonstrates a balanced consideration of the prompt before reaffirming their stance in the conclusion. Ideas are adequately extended and supported, fitting comfortably within the Band 7 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct and clear central topic. The student makes good use of cohesive devices to guide the reader through the arguments, as seen with transition markers like 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' 'However,' and 'In conclusion.' Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, two body paragraphs for the student's stance, a counter-argument paragraph, and the conclusion. Referencing is clear, and the overall arrangement is coherent, making the text easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, allowing for some flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'excessive number of choices,' 'mental well-being,' 'numerous options,' and 'educational resources' show a good command of topic-specific language. There are also successful attempts to use less common items with an awareness of style and collocation, such as 'considerable amount of time,' 'feeling satisfied,' and 'personal needs and interests.' Word choice is generally natural, and spelling and word formation are completely accurate throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The student displays a strong control of grammar, utilizing a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentence forms. Examples of complex structures include conditional or participial clauses embedded in sentences like 'when shopping online, customers may find hundreds of similar products' and 'which can improve their learning opportunities.' The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout the essay. There are no noticeable grammatical errors that cause strain or impede communication, reflecting a solid command of sentence mechanics.
