Student answer (Band 6.5)
Having choices are important in our life for before making any decision. Some people believe that nowadays we have multiple choices in our daily life. I strongly believe that nowadays we do have many choices in different things that we need in our life. I also believe that this has more advantages than disadvantages.
Those who believe that we have many choices often say that when we plan to buy different things in our life, we tend to spend a significant amount of time in making a choice before finalising our purchase. This is because we want to make sure that the product or service that we are choosing has better quality than other options. For example, if we talk about the automotive industry which has given us a wide range of different brands. When a person plans to buy a new car they will most likely search for different brands in the market and compare the features and price of one brand with others. This can ensure the buyer that the car they are buying is better in quality within their price range. Therefore, nowadays some people believe that we have multiple choices.
Another example of having many choices is that when we plan to travel overseas we have different airline options to choose. This gives us the flexibility to choose different airline services within our price range. For example, when I travel to other countries I compare multiple airlines according to my preference. This benefits me financially by saving money on the fare and also gives freedom to choose any service I want.
In conclusion, too many choices can sometimes be very time consuming in making decisions, however, I still believe that it has more advantages than drawbacks. Therefore, it is true that people nowadays prefer to have multiple choices than limited options.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses the prompt directly and takes a clear position agreeing that we have too many choices and that this is generally advantageous. All parts of the task are addressed, and the ideas are supported with relevant examples, such as the automotive industry and choosing airline services. The position is maintained throughout the essay, although the conclusion briefly acknowledges the counter-argument that choices can be time-consuming before reaffirming the main stance. The supporting arguments are extended well, particularly through personal and industrial examples. However, the development could be slightly more analytical to reach the highest bands, but it fully satisfies the criteria for a solid band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: an introduction presenting the writer's stance, two body paragraphs providing specific examples, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively to connect ideas, such as 'This is because', 'For example', and 'Therefore'. Paragraphing is used appropriately and logically separates the different arguments. However, referencing is occasionally repetitive, and some transitional phrases feel slightly mechanical, which prevents the essay from achieving a higher band score. Overall, the logical flow is clear and easy to follow throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'significant amount of time', 'automotive industry', 'flexibility', and 'financially'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'finalising our purchase', though some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'Having choices are important' (subject-verb agreement error aside) or 'multiple choices in different things'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and vocabulary does not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments easily. To push into higher bands, more precise academic collocations and sophisticated phrasing would be required.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors that recur throughout the text. For instance, the opening sentence contains a subject-verb agreement error ('Having choices are important' instead of 'is'). Additionally, there are minor phrasing issues such as 'in making a choice' rather than 'when making a choice' and 'multiple choices' where 'many choices' or 'a wide variety of choices' is more idiomatic. Despite these errors, complex structures are attempted and punctuation is generally sound, meaning communication is rarely impeded. The majority of simple sentences are accurate.
