Student answer (Band 7.0)
In modern society, people have access to a wider range of options than ever before. Although having many choices can sometimes make decision-making difficult, I partly agree with the view because a variety of options also gives people greater freedom and opportunities.
One major drawback of having too many choices is that it can make decision-making more challenging. When people are presented with a large number of similar products or services, they may spend a considerable amount of time comparing them and worrying about making the wrong decision. For example, when buying a smartphone online, customers can find hundreds of models with different features and prices. As a result, they may become confused and spend hours trying to select the most suitable product. In some cases, having too many alternatives can also make people less satisfied with their final decision because they may continue thinking about the options they did not choose.
On the other hand, having a wide range of choices can provide people with greater freedom and opportunities. Individuals can select products, educational programmes and careers according to their personal needs, interests and financial circumstances. For instance, students nowadays can choose from traditional universities, online courses and professional training programmes. This allows them to select an educational path that is suitable for their abilities and future goals. Similarly, consumers can compare different products and prices before making a purchase, which can help them find something that better matches their requirements.
In conclusion, although an excessive number of choices can make decision-making stressful and time-consuming, I believe that having a variety of options is valuable because it gives people greater freedom to make decisions based on their individual needs and circumstances.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both sides of the issue—the drawbacks of having too many choices, such as decision-making difficulties, and the benefits, such as freedom and opportunities. A clear position is established in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as buying a smartphone online and choosing educational pathways. The arguments are logical, cohesive, and directly related to the prompt. According to the Band 7 and 8 descriptors, the response covers all parts well and extends ideas effectively, earning a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introductory paragraph containing a clear thesis, followed by two well-supported body paragraphs addressing drawbacks and benefits respectively, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'One major drawback', 'For example', and 'On the other hand' are used effectively to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used logically and appropriately. The cohesion is well managed, fitting the Band 7 descriptor well.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with good flexibility and precision. Terms such as 'decision-making', 'considerable amount of time', 'financial circumstances', and 'professional training programmes' demonstrate an appropriate command of topic-specific language. There is an awareness of style and collocation, and the vocabulary choices allow the writer to convey ideas smoothly. While there are no major lexical errors, the vocabulary is slightly short of the consistently sophisticated range required for a Band 8, making Band 7 an accurate reflection of the student's lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures used accurately. Examples include concessive clauses ('Although having many choices can sometimes make decision-making difficult...') and conditional or relative clauses. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the punctuation and grammar are controlled well. Minor slips are virtually absent, and complex structures are handled with good control, supporting a Band 8 rating where the majority of sentences are error-free and show a wide range of grammatical features.
