Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, people have an enormous number of choices in almost every aspect of their lives, from what they eat and wear to where they work and how they spend their free time. While I agree that having too many options can sometimes create stress and confusion, I believe that the advantages of having greater choice outweigh the disadvantages.

One major problem with having too many choices is that it can make decision-making difficult. When people are presented with a large number of choices, they may spend excessive amounts of time comparing them and worrying about making the wrong decision. For example, when shopping online, customers can find hundreds of similar products with different prices, features and reviews. As a result, choosing even a simple item can become unnecessarily complicated. Moreover, people may feel dissatisfied with their final choice because they continue to wonder whether another option would have been better.

However, having a wide range of choices also provides significant benefits. Firstly, people can select products and services that better suit their individual needs and preferences. For instance, modern consumers can choose from many types of food, clothing and electronic devices according to their budget and lifestyle. Secondly, greater choice can encourage competition between businesses, which may lead to better quality and more reasonable prices. In the past, consumers often had limited chosices, whereas today they can easily compare different products before purchasing them.

In my own experience, having more choices has generally made life more eassy. For example, when choosing an educational course, I can compare different institutions, teaching methods and fees online. Although this process can sometimes be time-consuming, it allows me to make a decision based on my personal requirements rather than simply accepting the only option available.

In conclusion, although an excessive number of choices can make decision-making difficult, it make life eassier because individuals can chose products and services that better suit according to their budget and also increase the competition between businessmens, which they produced a good product and make their services more better than past time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both sides of the issue (the negative aspects of decision fatigue and the positive benefits of having choices) and clearly stating a position in the introduction that is maintained throughout. Ideas are well developed and supported with relevant examples, such as online shopping and educational course selection. The arguments are extended effectively, and the conclusion successfully summarises the writer's stance. The response meets all task requirements with a well-reasoned and balanced argument, earning a solid Band 7.0 for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with the introduction, moving through the drawbacks and benefits, providing a personal example, and concluding nicely. Cohesive devices such as 'While I agree', 'One major problem', 'However', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately. Although some minor phrasing in the conclusion feels slightly clunky, the overall flow and coherence remain strong, comfortably satisfying Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, using appropriate phrases like 'decision-making', 'excessive amounts of time', 'individual needs and preferences', and 'time-consuming'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors in the conclusion, such as 'eassy' instead of easy, 'chose' instead of choose, 'businessmens' instead of businesspeople or businesses, and 'more better' which is a double comparative. Because these lexical and spelling slips recur towards the end and impede precision, the score is capped at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditionals, concessive clauses ('While I agree that...'), and relative clauses successfully. There are many error-free sentences, particularly in the body paragraphs. However, grammatical accuracy drops slightly in the final paragraph with awkward phrasing ('make life eassier because individuals can chose products... which they produced a good product'). Overall, the grammar shows good control with occasional errors that rarely impede communication, aligning well with the Band 6.5 descriptors.
