Student answer (Band 7.0)
Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices. It is often argued that modern life offers an overwhelming number of options. This is mainly due to globalization and technology which have increased options in every field. I strongly agree with this view because an abundance of choices often leads to confusion and stress rather than happiness.
Firstly, consumers today face too many choices in everyday shopping. For example, when going to a supermarket to buy a simple product like shampoo, there are dozens of brands with different prices and features. Similaril, on online shopping apps like Amazon, there are thousands of options for a single product. As a result, people spend a lot of time comparing products and often feel confused. This phenomenon, known as choice overload, makes simple decisions more complicated and tiring.
Secondly, having too many choices also affects our career and lifestyle. In the past, people had limited career paths and followed a simple life. However, nowadays youngsters have hundreds of career options, study courses, and places to live. For instance, many students in India get confused between engineering, commerce, or going abroad. While this seems positive, it creates anxiety and fear of making the wrong decision. Many people constantly change their jobs or courses and never feel satisfied, because they think a better option exists. Therefore, too many choices can reduce satisfaction.
In conclusion, although having options can be beneficial, I believe that in the modern world, we have an excessive number of choices which causes confusion and dissatisfaction in both shopping and life decisions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting a clear and well-developed position on whether we have too many choices nowadays. The introduction clearly states, 'I strongly agree with this view because an abundance of choices often leads to confusion and stress rather than happiness.' The body paragraphs logically extend this argument by discussing everyday shopping and consumerism, and then broadening the scope to career choices and lifestyle decisions. Specific, relevant examples are provided, such as buying shampoo in a supermarket, browsing online shopping apps like Amazon, and Indian students choosing between engineering, commerce, or studying abroad. Ideas are well-supported with relevant explanation, notably the introduction of the psychological concept 'choice overload.' This demonstrates a high level of task fulfillment in line with Band 7 or 8 descriptors, showing full development of ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with a well-formulated introduction, followed by two distinct body paragraphs signalled by clear cohesive markers ('Firstly,' and 'Secondly,'), and a concise concluding paragraph introduced by 'In conclusion,'. Cohesive devices are used effectively and guide the reader smoothly through the writer's arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the shopping argument from the career and lifestyle argument. Referencing throughout the text is clear, ensuring that pronouns and demonstratives ('This phenomenon, known as choice overload') link back accurately to preceding ideas without ambiguity.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally flexible range of vocabulary suitable for an academic response. Phrases such as 'abundance of choices', 'choice overload', 'career paths', and 'fear of making the wrong decision' show good control of topic-specific language. There is an attempt to use less common lexical items ('globalization', 'excessive number', 'dissatisfaction'). However, there is a minor spelling slip in the second paragraph ('Similaril' instead of 'Similarly') and some vocabulary choices remain slightly common ('simple product', 'good control'). Nevertheless, the vocabulary is precise enough to convey the intended meaning accurately, and the lexical range comfortably meets the requirements for a Band 7 performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures with frequent error-free sentences. Examples of complex structures include 'This is mainly due to globalization and technology which have increased options in every field' and 'While this seems positive, it creates anxiety and fear of making the wrong decision.' Grammatical control is generally strong, with correct subject-verb agreement, appropriate tense usage for general truths, and accurate punctuation. The minor typographical error ('Similaril') is isolated and does not impede communication in any way. The majority of the sentences are error-free, reflecting solid command over sentence boundaries and clause subordination, fitting the Band 7 criteria.
