Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many countries, some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices. I partially agree with this view because it gives individuals a wide range of options in decision-making and also increases the productivity at work, but at the same time it may create confusion for people while making any decision and even lead to making a wrong decision.

Firstly, a large number of choices provides an individual with a wide range of options, which helps them in making any decision. This is because people often take effective decision when they are provided with a large number of options. For example, if students have to select a particular field in their career path, a wide variety of fields helps them to select a field of their interest. As a result, too many choices allows individuals to make effective decisions. Secondly, it also helps to improve the productivity at work. If a company provides a wide range of tools and softwares to their employees for completing the tasks, they are more likely to achieve higher productivity and reduce the time taken for completing the tasks.

On the other hand, there are certain drawbacks to consider. A wide range of choices may create confusion for a person while making any decision. This is because an individual may confuse whether to choose first or second option and even lead to waste of time, especially when they have to make a quick decision such as in emergencies. Additionally, too many choices may lead to wrong decision-making. If a person has a huge amount of choices, there is a greater chance that they will select a wrong option. For instance, children lose a huge amount of marks in MCQs compared to direct answers.

In conclusion, I partially agree that nowadays people have too many options because it may help in making effective decisions and also improves productivity at work. However, a lot of choices may create confusion and even lead to wrong decision-making. I believe that individuals have to consider the benefits and drawbacks of this view.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear, partial position on whether we have too many choices nowadays. The writer develops ideas well, providing distinct arguments for both sides. For instance, the first body paragraph discusses career choices and workplace productivity, while the second explores confusion and poor decision-making. However, some arguments feel slightly under-developed, such as the example regarding multiple-choice questions for children, which is a bit simplistic and weakly linked to the main premise. Nonetheless, a clear position is maintained throughout the essay, meeting the requirements of Band 6.5 to 7.0 well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear logical organization with a recognizable introduction, two distinct body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is used sufficiently. However, referencing and cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical, particularly in sentences like 'This is because people often take effective decision...', which slightly restricts the flow. Overall, the arrangement of ideas is coherent, satisfying the descriptor criteria for a Band 6.5 to 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'productivity', 'decision-making', 'emergencies', and 'drawbacks'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but some word choices and collocations are slightly imprecise or repetitive, such as 'take effective decision' instead of 'make an effective decision' and 'huge amount of choices' instead of 'vast array of choices'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and errors do not impede communication. This places the lexical performance firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over dependent clauses and conditional structures, as seen in 'if students have to select a particular field...'. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'an individual may confuse whether to choose first or second option' (missing reflexive pronoun or active/passive confusion) and 'increases the productivity' (unnecessary article). Punctuation is generally sound, and meaning remains clear despite the errors, aligning well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
