Student answer (Band 7.0)

Many individuals believe that people have too many choices in every aspect of their life in recent times. I believe despite a fact that having too many things to choose from can give decision fatigue, technological advancements and globalisation provide opportunities to choose different things that were not possible to obtain in past years.

Firstly, technological advancements have significantly increased people's access to knowledge and opportunities. The internet and modern communication systems allow individuals to access educational resources, research papers and information about different career paths from almost anywhere in the world. As a result, people are no longer restricted to the limited educational and professional choices available in their local communities. Moreover, exposure to different cultures and lifestyles has enabled individuals to develop a broader understanding of humanity and question certain traditional social norms. Some of these norms may unnecessarily restrict people's choices regarding their education, career and lifestyle. Therefore, the wider range of choices created by technology can give individuals greater freedom to make decisions according to their own interests and circumstances.

Secondly, globalisation has considerably expanded people's choices in terms of employment and lifestyle. In the past, individuals were often limited to job opportunities available in their own cities or countries, whereas today, many companies operate internationally and offer employment opportunities across the world. Consequently, people can consider working in another country if they believe that it offers better professional opportunities or a lifestyle that suits their aspirations. Globalisation has also made international migration more accessible, allowing individuals to experience different cultures and living environments. For example, a skilled professional from India can apply for a job in countries such as Japan, Germany or Canada without being restricted to opportunities within their hometown or country. Therefore, globalisation has expanded people's freedom to choose not only their careers but also where they want to live.

In conclusion, although having a large number of choices can sometimes lead to decision fatigue, I disagree that people nowadays have too many choices. Technological advancements have given individuals unprecedented access to knowledge and career opportunities, while globalisation has expanded their employment and lifestyle options across the world. Therefore, the wider range of choices available today generally provides people with greater freedom to shape their lives according to their individual needs and aspirations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The student presents a very clear and well-developed position throughout the essay. The introduction successfully outlines both sides by acknowledging the drawback of decision fatigue while firmly disagreeing with the premise that we have too many choices. Each body paragraph explores a distinct and relevant theme—technology in the first and globalisation in the second—supporting the main argument with logical explanations and a concrete example regarding skilled professionals. All parts of the prompt are addressed fully and effectively, meeting the criteria for a high band score. The ideas are extended smoothly without drifting off-topic, aligning closely with the Band 8 descriptor for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, starting with appropriate transition markers such as 'Firstly' and 'Secondly'. Cohesive devices like 'Consequently', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to connect ideas within and across sentences. Paragraphing is used logically to separate distinct arguments. Referencing is clear and controlled throughout the text. While cohesion flows naturally and supports readability well, minor mechanical overuse of transitional adverbs keeps it slightly below the highest level of mastery, comfortably placing it in the Band 7.5 to 8.0 range.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic essay. Phrases such as 'technological advancements', 'unprecedented access', 'professional opportunities', and 'international migration' are used accurately. There is a good attempt at less common lexical items like 'globalisation', 'aspirations', and 'decision fatigue'. Word choice and collocations are generally precise, though there are minor awkward phrasings such as 'in every aspect of their life in recent times' instead of 'in recent times, in every aspect of life'. Overall, the lexical range is adequate to convey precise meanings and supports the writer's arguments effectively, meriting a solid Band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The student exhibits a strong command of grammatical structures, successfully blending simple and complex sentences. Complex constructions involving subordinate clauses are used frequently and accurately, as seen in 'In the past, individuals were often limited to job opportunities available in their own cities or countries, whereas today...' The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. Minor slips are very rare, demonstrating excellent grammatical control. The sentence variety and high accuracy place this response securely at a Band 8 level.
