Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some opine that people are given too many choices, I completely agree with the statement, this selection can have positive and negative developments.

Multitude of options are available in every category. One reason for that are start-ups, compared with early age of industrialization where only the wealthy could afford to start a business, in today's world capital required to become an entrepreneur has significantly reduced. As a result, every category: stationary, food, kitchen utensil or technology gadgets are crowded with many companies with their separate product. This is a positive development as major manufacturers are now competing for resources and customers with local companies, leading to cheap and quality products which is beneficial to the end user.

Indecisiveness is the major outcome of having too many options. One reason for that is people, in the need of better product, compare the irrelevant properties of the product; therefore, the time needed to come to a conclusion increases. To exemplify, when a student buys a laptop, rather than focusing on important parts like the CPU, the GPU and the RAM, he will get stuck on less impactful choices like color and the brand name. As a result of focusing on the wrong options, they will likely choose the wrong product and regret it. This means that, if people were given too many options, they will often focus on unnecessary things and eventually get the wrong item.

To conclude, too many choices can lead to cheaper products, but also will increase the indecisiveness characteristic of a person.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt effectively by taking a clear position that we have too many choices and discussing both positive and negative developments. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. For instance, the paragraph explaining how start-ups and reduced capital requirements have increased product variety is clear and supported by examples such as 'stationary, food, kitchen utensil or technology gadgets.' The negative aspect—indecisiveness—is also elaborated with a relatable student and laptop example. However, the connection between having too many options and focusing on irrelevant properties is slightly generalised, and the conclusion mentions a positive development ('cheaper products') alongside a negative trait, which aligns well with Band 7 descriptors where all parts are addressed with a clear position and supported ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: introduction, positive economic development, negative psychological outcome, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'One reason for that', 'As a result', and 'To exemplify' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and logically. While some referencing and transitions are slightly mechanical—such as the repeated use of 'One reason for that is'—cohesion overall is well managed, satisfying the requirements for a Band 7 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is sufficient for the task and shows some attempts at less common and topic-specific items such as 'entrepreneur', 'indecisiveness', 'manufacturers', and 'competitors'. There are, however, some lexical and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'stationary' (which should be spelled 'stationery'), 'separate product' instead of 'distinct products', and 'indecisiveness characteristic of a person'. Despite these occasional errors in word choice and spelling, the range is adequate to convey meaning clearly, making Band 6.0 the most appropriate descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional structures ('if people were given too many options, they will often focus...') and relative clauses. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text. For example, the opening sentence contains a comma splice ('Some opine that people are given too many choices, I completely agree...'). Other issues include minor subject-verb agreement slips and awkward phrasing like 'compared with early age of industrialization'. Nonetheless, these errors rarely impede communication, placing the response firmly in the Band 6 category.
