Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt regarding whether we have too many choices nowadays, but it struggles significantly with task relevance and the development of a clear position. In the introduction, the writer merely echoes the prompt rather than clearly stating a stance, noting 'this essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the above statement, and I agree people have their on choices.' While an opinion is mentioned, the body paragraphs fail to logically discuss specific choices or present concrete examples, instead resorting to vague generalities such as 'the betterment of society' and 'expand their horizons, skills, and perseverance.' Furthermore, the reference to government regulations in the final paragraph deviates into an irrelevant topic. Because the ideas remain largely under-developed and circular, the response falls under Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into an introduction and three body paragraphs, showing a basic attempt at paragraphing. However, there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are frequently misused, repetitive, or awkward, as seen in transitions like 'To commence with' and 'Another crucial factor in the aforementioned statement'. Additionally, referencing is unclear and pronouns are often dangling or ambiguous, such as in the sentence 'Consequently, only an individual adheres to such a system can they expand their horizons'. The rigid and mechanical use of linking phrases without logical connection between sentences disrupts the flow, justifying a score of 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is repetitive and often unnatural. The writer relies heavily on abstract nouns and filler phrases to increase length, such as 'efficiency, productivity, and quality of life with a great deal of efficacy and convenience.' There are notable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'upsurge in the statement' and 'their on choices' instead of 'their own choices'. While the writer attempts less common vocabulary like 'perseverance', 'betterment', and 'efficacy', these are frequently used in contexts where they do not fit naturally, leading to occasional strain for the reader. This performance aligns with the Band 5 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences are almost uniformly flawed. There are frequent grammatical errors that impede comprehension, particularly regarding clause structure and subject-verb agreement. Examples include 'only an individual adheres to such a system can they expand their horizons' (inverted conditional/inversion error) and 'every people should have the right' (faulty determiner use). Errors in prepositions, punctuation, and word forms are pervasive throughout the text. Because complex sentences are frequently faulty and errors cause significant difficulty for the reader, the grammar score is 4.0.
