Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's modern world people have a wide range of choices in almost every aspect of life including health, education, business, jobs, shopping and entertainment. Some people believe that too many choices make life more complicated. I firmly agree with this statement because an excessive number of choices can make confusion and decision making stressful.

On one hand, having more choices gives people greater freedom and flexibility to choose what suits them best. For example in the educational field students can choose from variety of subjects in the universities according to their choices and interest and career. Similarly, people may have many choices during online shopping they can compare different products with their prices before making a purchase. This allows people to make decision that suit with their needs and preferences.

On the other hand, too many choices can create stress and make it difficult for the people to select what is best for them or what is not. Sometimes making a decision can be time- consuming, as people may spend many hours on deciding which option suits them best. While , comparing and worrying about the wrong choices. For instance, the people who shop online find it difficult due to having too many choices by comparing similar products with their prices and finding the best for them. Moreover, people may dissatisfied with their decisions because they continue to wonder wheather another option would have been better.

In conclusion, although having a variety of options provides freedom and flexibility, I believe too many options can create confusion and unnecessary stress. Therefore people should be focus on selecting options that best meet their needs rather than trying to consider every possible alternative.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of having many choices before clearly stating a personal position in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are relevant and supported with examples such as educational subjects and online shopping. However, some arguments lack deeper extension, and there is a tendency to touch upon ideas without fully exploring their broader implications. For instance, the discussion on stress could have been expanded by examining psychological impacts. Despite these minor limitations, the overall response is well-structured and covers the prompt adequately, aligning best with the Band 6.5 descriptor, rounded here to a 6.0 or 6.5. Evaluating positively, the clear stance and relevant examples support a solid Band 6.5 score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is logically organised with a clear overall progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct viewpoints, such as the benefits of choice versus the drawbacks. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, using transitional phrases like 'On one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, there are some mechanical or slightly awkward transitions, such as the fragment 'While , comparing and worrying about the wrong choices.' Additionally, referencing is occasionally imprecise. Overall, the logical structure and manageable flow of ideas place this response comfortably within the Band 6.5 range, demonstrating clear organisation throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to the prompt such as 'freedom and flexibility', 'decision making', 'time-consuming', and 'unnecessary stress'. There are some attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is occasionally accompanied by word-choice or collocation inaccuracies, such as 'make confusion' instead of 'cause confusion', and spelling or typo slips like 'wheather' instead of 'whether'. Despite these lexical slips, communication is never impeded, and the vocabulary remains generally appropriate for an academic task, supporting a Band 6.0 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with structures like 'although having a variety of options provides freedom and flexibility, I believe...'. However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, such as missing commas before conjunctions, run-on clauses (e.g., 'While , comparing and worrying...'), and incorrect prepositions like 'according to their choices and interest and career'. While these errors are noticeable, the majority of simple sentences are accurate and the complex structures do not impede overall communication. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors for grammar.
