Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's modern world, people have a wide range of choices in almost every aspect of life including health, education, business, jobs, shopping and entertainment. Some people believe that too many choices make life more complicated. I firmly agree with this statement because an excessive number of choices can cause confusion and decision-making stressful.

On one hand, having more choices gives people greater freedom and flexibility to choose what suits them best. For example, in the educational field, students can choose from a variety of subjects in the universities according to their choices and interest and career. Similarly, people have many choices during online shopping; they can compare different products with their prices before making a purchase. This allows people to make decision that suit their needs and preferences.

On the other hand, too many choices can create stress and make it difficult for the people to select what is best for them or what is not. Sometimes, making a decision can be time- consuming, as people may spend many hours on deciding which option suits them best. While comparing and worrying about the wrong choices. For instance, People who shop online may find it difficult due to having too many choices by comparing similar products with their prices and finding the best for them. Moreover, people may be dissatisfied with their decisions because they continue to wonder whether another option would have been better.

In conclusion, although having a variety of options provides freedom and flexibility, I believe too many options can create confusion and unnecessary stress. Therefore people should be focus on selecting options that best meet their needs rather than trying to consider every possible alternative.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the prompt, exploring both sides of the issue regarding modern choices before clearly stating and maintaining their position throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as educational subject choices and online shopping comparisons. For instance, the discussion on how comparing prices leads to decision fatigue directly supports the argument. While the ideas are relevant, some parts could have been pushed further into deeper critical analysis to reach the higher band thresholds. However, the writer covers all task requirements competently and presents a well-developed argument, successfully meeting the criteria for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently structured, moving from an introductory thesis statement to a balanced body paragraph structure ('On one hand', 'On the other hand'), and concluding effectively. Cohesive devices such as 'Similarly', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' are employed to connect ideas, though there are minor mechanical slips, such as the incomplete sentence structure 'While comparing and worrying about the wrong choices' which temporarily disrupts flow. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central topic. Overall, the essay is easy to follow, justifying a Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'decision-making', 'flexibility', 'preferences', and 'dissatisfied'. There are some attempts at less common lexical items, but occasional word choice and collocation issues appear, such as 'decision-making stressful' instead of 'stressful decision-making' or 'making decision' instead of 'making decisions'. Spelling is generally accurate throughout the response. Although precision is occasionally lacking, the vocabulary used does not impede communication in any way, comfortably securing a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and relative clauses like 'people who shop online may find it difficult...'. There are several grammatical errors present, such as 'people should be focus on selecting' (missing base verb form) and the aforementioned fragment 'While comparing and worrying about the wrong choices.' Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the majority of simple sentences remain entirely accurate. The control over grammar and punctuation shows adequate competence, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 6.0.
