Student answer (Band 6.5)

In today's modern world, people have a wide range of choices in almost every aspect of life including health, education, business, jobs, shopping and entertainment. Some people believe that too many choices make life more complicated. I firmly agree with this statement because an excessive number of choices can cause decision making stressful.

On one hand, having more choices gives people greater freedom and flexibility to choose what suits them best. For example, in the educational field, students can choose from a variety of subjects at the universities according to their choices and interests and career. Similarly, people have many choices during online shopping; they can compare different products with their prices before making a purchase. This allows people to make decision that suit their needs and preferences.

On the other hand, too many choices can create stress and make it difficult for people to select what is best for them or what is not. Sometimes, making a decision can be time-consuming, as people may spend many hours deciding which option suits them best. While they spend time comparing and worrying about the wrong choices. For instance, online shoppers may find it difficult due to having too many choices by comparing similar products with their prices and finding the best for them. Moreover, people may be dissatisfied with their decisions because they continue to wonder whether another option would have been better.

In conclusion, although having a variety of options provides freedom and flexibility, I believe too many options can create confusion and unnecessary stress. Therefore, people should focus on selecting options that best meet their needs rather than trying to consider every possible alternative.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout. The writer introduces the topic effectively and states a firm agreement with the prompt, noting that excessive choices cause decision-making to be stressful. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as educational choices and online shopping experiences. However, some arguments could have been further developed with deeper analysis rather than general statements. For instance, the discussion on shoppers finding it difficult to compare prices could be expanded to explore the psychological impact of choice overload in modern consumer society. Despite this slight tendency to over-generalise in places, the overall task response is clear, well-supported, and meets all requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are structured into a logical four-paragraph format that includes an introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively to connect ideas, such as 'On one hand,' 'On the other hand,' 'Similarly,' and 'In conclusion.' Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central topic. Referencing is generally clear and easy to follow. While some cohesive phrases are slightly formulaic, the overall flow of the essay is smooth and demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement that guides the reader effortlessly from one point to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision throughout the essay. Words and phrases such as 'freedom and flexibility,' 'time-consuming,' 'decision-making,' and 'excessive number' demonstrate an adequate control of vocabulary relevant to the topic. There are also attempts to use less common items, such as 'preferences' and 'alternative.' However, there are a few minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward phrasings, such as 'can cause decision making stressful' (which should be 'can make decision-making stressful') and 'difficult due to having too many choices by comparing similar products.' Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is more than adequate for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The writer successfully uses subordinate clauses and complex forms, such as 'While they spend time comparing and worrying about the wrong choices' and 'although having a variety of options provides freedom and flexibility, I believe too many options can create confusion.' There are several error-free sentences, demonstrating a good level of control over basic and intermediate grammar. However, a few grammatical slips and awkward constructions occur, such as 'students can choose from a variety of subjects at the universities according to their choices and interests and career' (which suffers from repetition and slight awkwardness) and the aforementioned phrasing in the introduction. Punctuation is generally accurate, and errors rarely impede communication.
