Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued that nowadays, people can make many choices. This essay will agree to this statement because people have become significantly aware and have unlimited access to social media.

In this new century of technology and innovation, people have far more awarness. Back in the days there were few typical topics of discussion like marriage, corporate job, family, etc. But nowadays there are many campaigns, social talks and march focusing on emerging area of knowledge and self disocvery like technology, arts, media, AI, personal and scoial rights. People happily explore these new realms as they provide them with new direction towards life, giving them sense of dependency and hope for their future.

Another important factor that have laid many choices infront of people is the widespread use of social media. Everyone from a child to elder is active on social media. Social media shows all the news, trends, philosphies all around the world and therefore connects people. Above all it is a platform that has given a right to everyone to raise their voices and to show their content regradless of their background. For example, nowadays we can see videos of content creator form far underdeveloped areas of South Africa.

In conclusion, due to the awarness on different topics and freedom of speech and expression through social media, people can opt many alternatives and hence can make many choices.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position that people nowadays have too many choices and provides reasons related to awareness and social media. However, the task requires a minimum of 250 words, and the student's response contains only 231 words. Because this length requirement is not met, the score must be penalized under Task Achievement. While the ideas regarding social media and emerging areas of knowledge are relevant, they lack full development and extension due to the restricted length. The introduction and conclusion are quite brief, and the examples, such as content creators from South Africa, remain somewhat general rather than fully explored. Therefore, the task is addressed only partially, fitting the Band 5 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a recognisable overall structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct ideas, such as awareness in the second paragraph and social media in the third. However, logical progression is sometimes hindered by mechanical or repetitive cohesive devices, such as 'Another important factor that have laid many choices' and 'Above all'. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences can feel abrupt. For instance, the transition from the discussion of social media to the South African example lacks smooth integration. Overall, the organisation shows a coherent arrangement, but the faulty use of cohesive devices aligns the response with Band 6.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'self disocvery', 'philosphies', and 'underdeveloped areas'. However, there are several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including 'awarness', 'infront', 'regradless', and 'creator form'. Furthermore, there are awkward collocations like 'laid many choices' instead of 'created many choices' or 'provided many options'. Despite these limitations and spelling errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the general meaning without impeding the reader's understanding. This performance fits comfortably within the Band 5 criteria for lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'This essay will agree to this statement because people have become significantly aware...' and 'Social media shows all the news, trends, philosphies all around the world and therefore connects people.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'Another important factor that have laid', missing prepositions, and incorrect verb forms. Despite these errors, the structures are varied enough to ensure that communication is not severely impeded, allowing the reader to follow the main arguments. This frequent error rate combined with a mixed range of structures warrants a Band 5.0 score.
