Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often debated whether public should be given multiple choices or simply provide them with a couple of choices. While plentiful choices gives the freedom to choose from the set of objects or decisions, I completely agree that handful of choices should be provided to the population.

On the one hand, providing citizens with the handful of selection choices promotes the well-being of the mental health. A person can get into the dilemna zone for an extended period of time beacuse of varities of items to pick from. For instance, a girl who prefer modern clothes might spend a whole day just searching for best appealing clothes for her, eventhough there are a lot of trending clothes. In addition to this, when a user knows what he/she wants, then it will be easier to find that object and save the ineffective time.

On the other hand, focusing on providing severity of choices directly addresses the ever-growing demand of the public. Although the multiple choices benefit to the residents, people can sometime make mistakes while choosing for the perfect one. Furthermore, with fixed number of selection from the quality goods, public will face less mental stresses. Recognizing this mental pressure, responsible authorities such as factories, and government have an obligation to ensure the well-being of the citizens.

In conclusion, while numerous choices forms the backbone of the freedom of livelihood, I firmly believe that people should be provided with handful of choices for their mental well-being and ensuring they do not make wrong choices. By bridging the gap between demand from the public and the supply of the solutions, the responsible authority can serve both the population and society at large.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position agreeing that we have too many choices and that a handful is preferable for mental well-being. The main ideas are relevant and supported with explanations, such as the example of searching for clothes and the prevention of stress. However, some arguments in the third paragraph are slightly contradictory or unclear, particularly the phrase 'focusing on providing severity of choices' where 'severity' appears to be misused for 'abundance' or 'plethora'. Furthermore, the conclusion reiterates the main stance effectively. Overall, the task is addressed well, matching the Band 6 descriptor where all parts are addressed with relevant ideas, though some development is slightly underdeveloped or confused by lexical slips.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs, featuring a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'In addition to this', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'On the other hand, focusing on providing severity of choices directly addresses...' does not logically contrast with the previous paragraph as it actually supports the same point about limiting choices. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but logical progression between sentences occasionally suffers due to awkward phrasing and mechanical linking.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate to the topic, including phrases like 'dilemna zone', 'well-being of the mental health', and 'responsible authorities'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices throughout the text. For example, 'dilemna' is misspelled (dilemma), 'provide them with a couple of choices' lacks a clear object in the first sentence ('whether public should be given'), and the word 'severity' in 'severity of choices' is misused. There are also issues with collocations, such as 'save the ineffective time'. Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the central message, placing it firmly at a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and concessive clauses ('While plentiful choices gives...', 'Although the multiple choices benefit to the residents...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions. Examples include 'whether public should be given' (missing article), 'plentiful choices gives' (agreement error), 'benefit to the residents' (unnecessary preposition), and 'eventhough' (spelling and punctuation issues). Complex structures are attempted, but they are often marred by these frequent errors, which prevent the grammar score from reaching a higher band, though they rarely impede overall communication.
