Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Some people think that modern society offers people too many choices. Meanwhile, I strongly disagree with statement that nowdays we have lot of choices.
Discussing the reasons to support my dis-agreement, the most evident reason is that more choices give people freedom. To justify it further, people can choose products and services according to their needs and budgets. Different lifestyles require different options. For instance, people with different dietary requirements can choose from vegetarian, vegan, and other types of food.
Furthermore, another one of the supporting factor for my belief is that more choices improve quality and competition. To be more precise, businesses compete to attract customers. This can encourage better products, lower prices, and improved services. For example, competition among smartphone companies gives consumers many models at different prices.
However, the opposing side should not be disregarded. The most significant argument is that too many choices cause stress and confusion. To be more specific, people have hundreds of options for food, clothes, entertainment, education, and careers. Comparing all these options takes time. People may worry about making the wrong decision. For example, young people choosing a career may feel confused because there are many courses and professions available. Nevertheless, people should want freedom in their choices therefore I disagree with statement.
To conclude and offer my viewpoint, I strongly disagree with that people have too many choices that cause stress and confusion. Reasons behind my dis-agreement, more choices give people freedom of choice and second is that more choices improve quality of products.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear and consistent position against the statement that we have too many choices. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as dietary requirements and smartphone models. However, some arguments lack deep extension, and the conclusion is slightly repetitive. The response meets the minimum length requirement easily, with clear development throughout. For instance, the discussion on how choice drives market competition is well-contextualised. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the Band 6 descriptor where all parts are addressed with relevant ideas, though some areas could be more fully developed or refined.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement with appropriate paragraphing. The introduction sets the stage, followed by body paragraphs addressing advantages of choices and the counter-argument, and ending with a clear conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'To be more specific', although some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive in their formulaic structures (e.g., 'To justify it further', 'To be more precise'). Referencing is generally clear, and information flows in a logical sequence. This performance aligns well with Band 6, where there is a coherent overall arrangement and logical progression, despite some mechanical cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task. Words and phrases like 'modern society', 'dietary requirements', 'smartphone companies', and 'consumer' show a reasonable ability to discuss the topic. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, such as 'nowdays' instead of 'nowadays', 'lot of choices' instead of 'a lot of choices', and 'dis-agreement' instead of 'disagreement'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, but word-choice inaccuracies and spelling slips prevent a higher score. Despite these flaws, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without causing major impediments to communication, matching Band 6 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The student successfully constructs some complex sentences, such as 'For instance, people with different dietary requirements can choose from vegetarian, vegan, and other types of food.' However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout, such as 'disagree with statement' (missing article), 'another one of the supporting factor' (plurality error), and 'disagree with that people have too many choices'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical slips are frequent enough to detract from accuracy. Because the errors rarely impede overall communication and a mix of structures is present, this performance is characteristic of Band 6.
