IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some individuals think that nowadays we have lot of options. I agree with this statement as different people have their own way of thinking and choosing their things.

On the one hand, the major reason can be the Artificial intelligence as this was not there in recent years, but now this has changed the world.

This helps in gettting the work in efficient way. For instance, if the person wants to do the work in less time then the person have many options such as chatgpt, AI, chatbot, googlebard, with the help of this the work will become easy and in flexible way. As a result, this helps them to work without tension and can do work before deadline.

On the other hand, the people who need the health facilities they can take the free medical checkups and medicines or people can go to private hospitals as this totally depend on the person choice because if the person have the money then the person can go to private hospitals if not then they can go to the government free schemes. For example, if it is operation type treatment then it is better to go in private hospitals as compared to governmnet hospitals because the treatment will be better and good in private hospitals. As a result, this help them to choose according to their budget.

In conclusion, there are lot of choices or options and this totally depends on the person to person, while come into many things people have different options and way of thinking.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear stance ('I agree with this statement') and supporting it with examples related to artificial intelligence and healthcare options. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat superficial. For example, the reference to AI tools like 'chatgpt, AI, chatbot, googlebard' is a list rather than a fully expanded discussion. Similarly, the healthcare paragraph contrasts government and private options but lacks deep extension. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of support places this performance at Band 5.5, meeting the core requirements of addressing all parts of the task while leaving ideas slightly under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into logical paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a basic overall progression, utilising transitional phrases like 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'as a result' and 'the person'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in sentences like 'with the help of this the work will become easy'. While paragraphing is used sufficiently, the awkward transitions and repetitive referencing prevent the response from reaching Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The vocabulary contains frequent basic repetitions, such as repeating 'person' and 'work' multiple times in close proximity (e.g., 'if the person wants to do the work in less time then the person have many options'). There are attempts to use less common items like 'artificial intelligence' and 'medical checkups', but awkward word choices and collocation errors appear, such as 'gettting the work in efficient way' and 'operation type treatment'. These noticeable errors occasionally cause slight strain for the reader, aligning closely with Band 5.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the person have'), missing articles ('in efficient way', 'in private hospitals'), and incorrect prepositions ('depend on the person choice'). Run-on sentences and comma splices also occur, such as in the final sentence of the first body paragraph. While the meaning remains mostly clear despite these errors, the high frequency of inaccurate complex structures keeps the grammar score at Band 5.0.
