Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an evidence why some people think we have enormous options compared to the past. I largely agree with this view because of consumer products and entertainment.

One of the major reasons to think about numerous choices is that consumer products provide huge variety of brands, models, colors and features. This allows customer to explore different products and choose a product that suits well. For example, choosing a smartphone from many options take a longer time, but also provides opportunity to select based on the personal interests. Moreover, entertainment also provides enormous options such as shows, series, movies, etc. Streaming platform provide thousands of films, series, and videos. People often waste time deciding what to watch rather than actually watching something useful. In addition, student have countless courses, universities, and career paths. There are more opportunities for individual, but choosing the right option can create stress and uncertainty.

However, more choices are beneficial because of better quality and competition. Businesses compete to attract customers, by reducing the price or promoting products through sportsperson, which can gradually take place in everyones' mind. Consumers are not limited to a few products available on markets. For example, smartphone industry offers numerous brands and models, which forces companies such as Samsung, Xiomi to introduce new features. Therefore, greater choice can give consumers more freedom while also encouraging business to improve their products.

I largely agree that modern society offers an excessive number of choices, particularly in consumer goods and entertainment. Although this variety gives people greater freedom and access to better services, an overwhelming range of products lead to confusion.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a clear position in the introduction and concluding paragraph that we indeed have too many choices nowadays. The response covers consumer products, entertainment, and education or career paths to extend ideas. For instance, the discussion on smartphones and streaming platforms illustrates how excessive options lead to time wastage and stress. Although the arguments are generally relevant and supported, some ideas like the mention of students and career paths could have been expanded further to reach full development. Nevertheless, the main position is sustained throughout, and the task requirements are properly met.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is arranged coherently with an identifiable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different supporting points, such as the disadvantages of too many choices in body paragraph one and the benefits regarding competition in body paragraph two. Cohesive devices are employed, including transition words like 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'However'. However, some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical or abrupt, and logical progression within sentences could occasionally be smoother. Overall, the organization is clear and easy to follow throughout the essay.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'consumer products', 'streaming platform', 'uncertainty', and 'competition'. There are some attempts at less common lexical items, but also noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'There is an evidence' instead of 'There is evidence', 'take a longer time' instead of 'takes a longer time', and 'everyones' mind'. Spelling is generally acceptable, and while minor slips occur, they do not impede overall communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. Examples include conditional and relative clauses like 'This allows customer to explore different products and choose a product that suits well'. However, grammatical errors are fairly frequent, including article omissions ('customer' instead of 'customers', 'student' instead of 'students', 'market' instead of 'the market'), singular/plural agreement errors ('Xiomi' instead of 'Xiaomi'), and minor preposition or punctuation issues. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly at band 6.0.
