IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued that everyone has numerous options in this modern era. I agree with this claim and this essay will examines the statement in two opinions.

I personally believe that, everyone can become and lead a life they want. And this is due to the fact that optons are abundant. Talking about career options, there are wide range of fields which any individual can select based on self-preservation. However, the options can be reduced based on their domain, but this does not impact their job. For example, in my major which is Information Technology, i have many options and can choose whichever i am passionate about. So this implies that, eventhough i choose any sort of domain, i still have many options.

As time changes, the way of living also does, back in times people were unaware of their choices and used to stick to those known to them. Earlier, students in schools or colleges were not exposed to many opportunities for their career. This causes regrets when they grow and end up in depression. For instance, my parents when were studying in colleges did not know much about technology and career options, just because of that reason, they did not even recognize their goals. For this reason only, they faced adversities in their life and now regret that if they could have options for that.

Finally, i would like to conclude that people have many choices in every sector and not only that but also within the selected options.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student addresses the prompt by agreeing with the statement that we have too many choices today and attempts to present supporting arguments based on career options and generational shifts. A clear position is stated in the introduction, declaring, 'I agree with this claim.' However, the development of ideas lacks depth and clarity in places, particularly when discussing 'self-preservation' and domain restrictions. The explanation provided in phrases like 'the options can be reduced based on their domain, but this does not impact their job' is slightly confused and under-developed. Furthermore, the claim that lack of choices in the past caused people to 'end up in depression' is an over-generalisation. While the response touches on all parts of the task, the arguments would benefit from more concrete examples rather than relying solely on personal family anecdotes. This performance aligns best with a Band 6.0 descriptor, where relevant ideas are presented, but some are under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Progression is attempted through transitional phrases such as 'However', 'For example', and 'Finally'. However, paragraphing is somewhat problematic; the second body paragraph is extremely long and conflates multiple ideas regarding career flexibility and historical comparison into a single block of text. Additionally, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly used, as seen in 'For this reason only, they faced adversities in their life and now regret that if they could have options for that.' Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the transition between sentences can feel disjointed. Despite these weaknesses, the overall message remains understandable. This reflects the characteristics of a Band 6.0, where information and ideas are generally coherent, but cohesion within and between sentences can be faulty.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'self-preservation', 'adversities', and 'abundant'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'examines the statement in two opinions' instead of 'perspectives', and 'optons' (a spelling error). The phrase 'based on self-preservation' is also used incorrectly in the context of choosing a career field. While these lexical errors occur, they do not severely impede communication. Repetition of basic words like 'options' is frequent throughout the text. These features fit the Band 6.0 profile, which notes an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempts at less common vocabulary with some inaccuracy, and spelling errors that do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses, such as 'which any individual can select' and 'whichever i am passionate about'. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several noticeable mechanical and grammatical errors, including lowercase 'i' pronouns ('i have many options'), comma splices, and tense inconsistencies ('this essay will examines'). The sentence 'now regret that if they could have options for that' is grammatically tangled and awkward. While complex forms are attempted, they frequently contain errors. These issues place the response firmly at Band 5.0, where a limited range of structures is used, attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, and frequent errors occur, although they do not completely obscure the meaning.
