Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by expressing a partial agreement regarding whether we have too many choices nowadays. The position is somewhat clear, but the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the discussion on the advantages of freedom of choice and the disadvantages such as confusion and stress is introduced with basic examples like shopping or food items, but these points are not sufficiently extended or supported with deeper reasoning. The ideas tend to generalise without providing a thorough explanation of why having too many choices impacts society in the ways described. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to fully develop each main idea with well-supported arguments and relevant explanations that explore the issue in greater depth throughout the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays some organization with a clear overall structure, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, there is no clear overall progression of ideas, and the logical flow is occasionally hindered by abrupt transitions and repetitive statements. Cohesive devices are used, but they tend to be mechanical or somewhat inaccurate, such as starting multiple sentences with 'To commence with', 'The main point is', and 'To illustrate'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas could be managed more effectively to ensure a smoother transition between advantages, disadvantages, and the concluding thoughts. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as in the conclusion where pronouns like 'it' lack a precise antecedent. To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices naturally and ensure a clearer, more progressive development of ideas across paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'prominent', 'alternatives', and 'personality', but there are noticeable errors in word form, spelling, and word choice that cause some difficulty for the reader. For example, 'dicission' and 'chioce' are misspelled, and phrases like 'individuals confuse to decide' and 'they choice another thing' demonstrate lexical inaccuracies. The range of vocabulary lacks flexibility, often relying on repetitive terms like 'choices', 'individuals', and 'products'. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, use words with greater precision and correct spelling, and demonstrate better control over word forms and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few basic complex forms. Attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, featuring frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of grammatical inaccuracies include missing articles ('career paths', 'shopping'), incorrect preposition usage ('suit on their personality'), and awkward verb structures ('individuals confuse to decide'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with sentence boundaries and fragment use like 'Moreover, not only a better opportunity but also better career paths.' To progress, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures and improve overall grammatical accuracy by monitoring verb forms, article usage, and sentence construction.
