Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task partially, presenting a clear position that we nowadays have too many choices, but the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the discussion on online shopping touches upon the challenge of comparing products like a phone, but it lacks sufficient extension and depth. Furthermore, the response touches upon unrelated concepts such as streaming platforms and choosing movies in a paragraph meant to address fashion and education. Additionally, it must be noted that the response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 250 words, falling short by 11 words. To reach a higher band, the writer would need to fully develop all ideas with well-supported examples and ensure the word count requirement is satisfied.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organization with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but the essay lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, though the grouping of ideas is occasionally disjointed, such as abruptly mixing streaming platforms into a paragraph about education and fashion. Cohesive devices are used in a somewhat repetitive or inadequate manner, with transitional phrases like 'Another area is where' and 'side this' feeling mechanical or inaccurate. Referencing is also occasionally unclear. To improve, the writer needs to ensure logical sequencing between paragraphs and use a wider, more natural range of cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through the arguments.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic meaning. The writer attempts some less common words and phrases, such as 'rapid growth', 'consumers', and 'streaming platforms', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling, such as 'preference' instead of preferences, 'optons intends' instead of options instead, 'greter fredom' instead of greater freedom, 'excessives' instead of excessive, and 'carrier' instead of career. These lexical errors sometimes cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their vocabulary range and improve accuracy in spelling and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few attempts at complex sentences that are frequently faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that cause difficulty for the reader, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'human beings has so many', punctuation errors like lowercase 'i', and prepositional or structural errors such as 'opt to enroll themsevels in such schools'. Complex structures lack control. To reach the next band, the writer needs to produce a greater variety of error-free complex sentences and maintain better control over basic grammar, punctuation, and verb forms.
