Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, stopping at only 117 words, which means the task is responded to only minimally. While the writer attempts to address the prompt by discussing whether we have too many choices today, the ideas remain very limited and under-developed. The introduction outlines an agreement with the statement, but the body paragraph quickly trails off into a general list of technology tools rather than fully exploring the implications of having excessive choices in modern life. To reach a higher level, the writer must expand the response well beyond the minimum word limit, fully develop ideas with relevant explanations, and present a well-supported position throughout a complete essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The essay displays some basic organization, such as attempting to introduce the topic in a first paragraph and beginning a body paragraph with 'Firstly'. However, overall progression is lacking due to the extremely short length and abrupt ending of the text. Paragraphing is not used sufficiently or appropriately, as the response breaks off mid-thought in the second paragraph without a concluding section. Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes faulty, with repetitive structures used to link ideas rather than a flexible range of connectors. To improve coherence and cohesion, the writer should structure the essay into distinct, balanced paragraphs containing an introduction, clear body paragraphs with distinct supporting points, and a logical conclusion, using a wider variety of cohesive markers to connect ideas smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, utilizing everyday terms such as 'tools', 'work', 'product', and 'facility'. There are frequent spelling and word-form errors that strain the reader, including 'repaidly' instead of rapidly, 'devloping' instead of developing, 'aviales' and 'avilable' instead of available, 'aslo' instead of also, and 'diffrent' instead of different. The range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for expressing simple concepts, struggling to convey more precise meanings or less common lexical items appropriately. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire by learning correct spellings, using precise terminology related to modern technology and consumer choice, and avoiding the constant repetition of basic words.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical structures are very limited, consisting mainly of simple and basic sentences with frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader. There are persistent issues with verb tenses and auxiliary verbs, such as 'in past we could not have options' and 'in past we colud not had this types of facility'. Punctuation and capitalization are also problematic, with missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences and erratic spacing around commas and periods. Attempts at complex structures are largely absent or faulty. To improve grammatical performance, the writer must practice standard sentence patterns, ensure correct subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, particularly when referring to past time frames, and pay careful attention to basic punctuation rules.
