Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by expressing an opinion on whether people today have too many choices, specifically focusing on career paths and starting businesses. However, the development of these ideas remains limited and under-developed, placing the response at this level. The writer presents relevant points, such as the role of online courses and technological advancements in modern business, but the elaboration lacks depth and specific context. For instance, the discussion on crafting items and hiring others moves quickly without fully explaining how these elements directly prove that people have an overwhelming or excessive number of choices. Furthermore, the position taken is visible in the introduction and conclusion, but the supporting arguments tend to generalise rather than thoroughly extend the concepts.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the writing into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct ideas, such as career choices and business opportunities. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and awkward, as seen in transitional phrases like 'To commence with' and 'Moving further', which feel forced. Referencing and logical progression within sentences occasionally falter, making the flow of ideas slightly bumpy for the reader. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to employ a wider range of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that sentences link together with smoother logical transitions, avoiding repetitive transitional formulas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited in range, though minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'efficiency' and 'technological', but these attempts are frequently accompanied by lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'provided notion', 'fullfile their dream', and 'heired other people'. Spelling and word form errors are noticeable throughout the text, including 'nowdays', 'coures', 'carees', 'achive', 'expend', and 'incresae'. While communication is generally maintained, these errors cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the lexical score from rising. To improve, the writer should focus on precise word choice, correct word forms, and accurate spelling of common terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on basic sentence forms alongside faulty attempts at complex sentences. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader, including missing articles ('at present time', 'in ancient time'), subject-verb agreement issues ('people are done hard work', 'when item sells are incresae'), and incorrect prepositions. Run-on sentences and punctuation lapses, such as comma splices ('...get more money, but nowdays...'), also occur frequently throughout the text. To achieve a higher score, the writer must reduce the frequency of basic grammatical errors and demonstrate better control over complex sentence patterns and verb tenses.
