Student answer (Band 6.5)

A small number of the general public believe that people these days have a lot of options regarding anything. I firmly believe this is the case, as people are suffering from indecisiveness due to the large number of choices.

Firstly, in this rapidly changing era, people come across a lot of choices throughout their lives. In terms of career options, previously attaining higher education was very rare, so only a few people could access it, and most of the people followed in their families' footsteps. But now, due to its availability, people can choose whichever career path they like; there are a number of subjects and specialised fields to choose from. Even in much smaller scale, the variety of food options people get to choose from is numerous, the convenienvce of ordering by sitting at home, gives people the advantage of choosing amongst different cuisines.

Furthermore, even in the entertainment industry, the tradition of going to the cinema halls gave people the opportunity to choose from a limited number of films. However, in the current generation, because of streaming websites, people have access to movies of different genres, and they can enjoy movies from around the world. Not only that, but constant innovation in the technology industry always presents us with better options, which has taken over every aspect of our lives. As a result, we are left with a lot of choices to make throughout our day amongst vast options.

In conclusion, due to the rapid advancement of this era people these days are fortunate enough to be able to make a choice which best fit their needs amongst other options from small to big decisions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the opening: you agree that people now have many options, and the conclusion maintains this view. You address the topic through careers, food, entertainment and technology, so the examples are relevant. However, the response mainly demonstrates that choices have increased rather than fully explaining the claim that there are “too many” choices. The opening mentions indecisiveness, but this consequence is not developed with an example or explanation in the body. The career and entertainment comparisons are understandable, though broad, and the food example is only briefly stated. To strengthen the response, explain more fully how an abundance of options creates difficulty or disadvantages, and support that point with a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The ideas progress from career and food choices to entertainment and technology, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Furthermore” and “In conclusion” make the sequence easy to follow. This gives the response a coherent arrangement. Some connections are less smooth, however: the first body paragraph moves from higher education to food without explaining the relationship between these examples, while the second groups entertainment and technology together quite broadly. The repeated use of “choices” and “options” also makes cohesion somewhat mechanical. More precise links between each example and the central idea of indecisiveness would improve progression and make the paragraphing feel more purposeful.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “career path,” “specialised fields,” “streaming websites,” “genres” and “constant innovation.” These terms help communicate examples across several areas of modern life. There are also some imprecise or awkward choices: “a small number of the general public” does not naturally express the intended idea, and “the convenience of ordering by sitting at home” is an unnatural phrase. “The variety ... is numerous” is also an inaccurate collocation, and “convenienvce” contains a spelling error. Repetition of “choices” and “options” limits flexibility. Aim for more natural collocations and precise wording, such as describing a “wide range” of food or saying that people can “order from home.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses with “because” and “so,” and the meaning is generally clear. The sentence beginning “Previously attaining higher education was very rare” shows an attempt to compare past and present, while the final sentence provides a clear conclusion. Some grammatical errors remain. In “the convenience of ordering by sitting at home, gives,” the comma incorrectly separates the subject from its verb; “the variety ... is numerous” also has a faulty sentence construction. In the conclusion, “a choice which best fit their needs” needs a verb form that agrees with “choice,” and the long final sentence would benefit from clearer clause structure. Review agreement, punctuation and sentence boundaries to make complex ideas more controlled.
