IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

People feel that nowadays there are too many choices. I fully agree with this statement. I think this creates major problems in society. In the next few paragraphs i will discuss two problems that are created.

Firstly when we get into shops there are so many choices to choose from. If you just take the milk for instance. There is longlife milk, low-fat milk, full cream milk and almond milk. These are just a few options of people have. The more choices people have the more difficult it gets to choose and this is or first problem in society.

People also have the choice whether they want to work or if they want to stay at home and still receive money. The government introduced SASSA where people can stay at home and do nothing and still receive a monthly income. This makes it easy for the lazy citizens to stay at home and get money for absolutely doing nothing. This choice is another problem for society, because this has a negative impact on our economy.

These are only two problems that is created in society. I feel people have to many choices to choose from and this creates big problems for our future.

Lets think before we choose and let's choose wisely.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

Your position is clear from the opening: “I fully agree,” and you give two relevant areas—consumer choice and government support. The milk examples make the first point concrete, while the SASSA example shows an attempt to connect choice with economic effects. However, the discussion is only partly developed: the link between having many milk options and a serious social problem is asserted rather than explained, and the second point relies on a broad judgement about recipients without evidence or qualification. The conclusion repeats your view but does not add much. The response is also 38 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to explain and support your ideas. Develop each reason with clearer explanation and a specific, balanced example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and a final paragraph restates your position. Sequencing words such as “Firstly” and “These are only two problems” help readers follow the structure. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “This is or first problem” does not clearly identify how the shopping example becomes a wider social problem, and “These are only two problems that is created” refers back to the points without summarising their relationship. The final slogan, “Lets think before we choose,” feels detached from the argument. Use clearer links between each example and its consequence, and make the conclusion synthesise the reasons rather than introduce a slogan.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough everyday vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “options,” “monthly income,” and “negative impact on our economy.” The examples of different milk types also make the topic understandable. However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, particularly “choices to choose from,” “problems in society,” and “doing nothing.” Some wording makes the argument sound overly general or informal, such as “lazy citizens.” More precise terms would help you explain the effects of choice and welfare support without relying on repeated general words. Aim to use topic-specific vocabulary and accurate collocations, while keeping the tone measured and appropriate for an academic essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

Most of your sentences are straightforward, and the reader can generally understand the intended meaning. You also attempt longer structures, for example, “The more choices people have the more difficult it gets to choose,” and use a conditional example beginning “If you just take the milk for instance.” However, the range remains limited, and errors occur frequently enough to affect accuracy. Examples include “one problem” written as “or first problem,” “These are just a few options of people have,” and “two problems that is created,” where sentence structure or agreement is faulty. Capitalisation and punctuation also need attention, including lowercase “i” and “Lets” without an apostrophe. Practise accurate complex sentences and check agreement, sentence boundaries, and apostrophes during proofreading.
