IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Most individuals have a belief that in present we have so much choices, which I strongly disagree. Everyone cannot have plentiful choices in their life, such as there are only a handful of jobs from which people can build there career on andracism and discrimination are binding many people, refraining them from getting various options in life.
The rising job-market gives the impression that there are many jobs and that anyone can easily pick their dream occupation, which is a lie. There are only a small amount of jobs that are thriving nowadays and have enough salary to live comfortably. As a result, many people are bound to grow a career that earns them well enough and has a good amount of jobs in reality. This shortage of occupation variation affects many aspirants, who were interested in the least popular job. For example, in Bangladesh nowadays almost everyone studies engineering and medical, in order to be solvent and get a well-payed job after graduating.
Discrimination and racism are giving people less opportunities in life. Nowadays, many places have banned women from workplaces or even from completing their minimum education. Not only that but also many cultures do not accept blacks or whites, preventing them to live life with freedom and various options. In Afghanistan, for instance, women cannot continue their education after grade five and also they are not permitted to get a job. Thus, many women and people of colors, facing discrimination and racism, are getting less choices in life.
In conclusion, although it is believed by many that currently we have so many available choices, it is not true. People around the world are still struggling to find variation in jobs, limiting them from their dream careers. Current racism and discrimination are disadvantaging many white and black people and women, repectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you strongly disagree that people nowadays have too many choices, and you support it with two relevant areas—employment and discrimination. The Bangladesh example illustrates pressure to choose engineering or medicine, while the Afghanistan example supports your point about women’s restricted options. This addresses the task, but some ideas are more fully explained than others. In particular, the claim that there are “only a small amount of jobs” is broad and would benefit from evidence or a clearer explanation of how limited job availability reduces choice. The discussion also focuses mainly on jobs and education; explaining what “too many choices” means in other aspects of life, or acknowledging why some people hold that view, would make the response more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction states your position, two body paragraphs develop separate reasons, and the conclusion restates your view. Paragraphing helps the reader follow the shift from employment to discrimination, and examples are placed in relevant sections. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For instance, “As a result” does not clearly show how the preceding claim leads to the next point, and “Not only that but also” is awkwardly used to add another example. The conclusion repeats the main points rather than drawing them together. Use more precise links between claims and explanations, and make references such as “many people” or “various options” more specific so the progression is easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “discrimination,” “occupation,” “aspirants,” and “solvent,” and the reader can generally understand your argument. There are also attempts to express nuanced ideas, such as people being “bound” to pursue certain careers. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “a rising job-market,” “a small amount of jobs,” “well-payed,” and “less choices” are examples. Some expressions are also unclear, such as “do not accept blacks or whites.” Aim for natural collocations and precise, respectful wording—for example, “a limited number of jobs,” “well-paid employment,” and “people of different racial backgrounds.” Check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “which,” “who,” and “although,” and most of the argument remains understandable. Some sentence structures are controlled, such as “For example, in Bangladesh nowadays almost everyone studies engineering and medical…” However, there are some errors in sentence formation, agreement, articles, and punctuation. The opening sentence, “Most individuals have a belief that in present we have so much choices,” has several grammatical problems, while “Everyone cannot have plentiful choices” uses an unclear negative construction. In “many people are bound to grow a career,” the verb pattern is not grammatical. Review countable and uncountable nouns, article use, and clause construction, and proofread long sentences to ensure each relationship between ideas is expressed accurately.
