IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

First of all, i believe that people this days are more independent then in the past because this days people are more educated and connected with the world than in the past. They are getting more advanced and getting knowledge about whats happening the outer world.

Secondly, the people might argue that they have ton of opportunities in the educational and job fields and its true at some extent but there are some people who disagree with this statement because that they say all the opportunities comes with a price. Because a person who really like to do something and want to make a career in it but he lack in skilled work or in getting any investment or help from someone might cause him or her to lose that opportunity for life.

Thirdly, the choices this days are only for those who have good financial situation and good command on his or her skill. Some people saying excellence can be obtained after getting the opportunity but people this days hire or prefer only those who are already skilled and they didnt like to waste there time on the person who is unskilled or who is not financially supported.

In the conclusion, in the modern day we do have more opportunities than in the past but the number of educated people are also increasing widely so there is high rate of competion involved with it to.The choices do make our thinking free but the society rules and competion is bring us back to the page.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You take a broadly clear position: although opportunities have increased, you argue that access is unequal and competition limits people’s choices. The points about education, employment, financial support and skills are relevant to the question. However, the response only partly develops the issue of having “too many choices”: it often shifts to whether people can access opportunities, without explaining whether the number of choices itself is excessive or how it affects decision-making. The example of someone unable to pursue a career is also general rather than specific, and the conclusion introduces the idea that choices make thinking free without explaining it. Develop a direct answer to the question and support each main reason with a clearer example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an opening, three body points signalled by “First of all,” “Secondly” and “Thirdly,” and a conclusion. This helps readers identify the main stages of your argument. However, the progression is not always clear: the discussion moves from independence to unequal access and then competition, without showing how these points answer the question about too many choices. Several sentences are long and contain multiple ideas joined by “because” or “but,” making relationships harder to follow. The conclusion also introduces a new, unclear claim about society bringing people “back to the page.” Organise the body around two or three directly relevant reasons, and use clearer sentence boundaries and links between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “opportunities,” “educational and job fields,” “financial situation,” “skilled” and “competition.” These terms allow you to discuss access to work and education. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, such as “this days,” “ton of opportunities,” and “outer world.” Some word forms and collocations also make the meaning less natural, including “excellence can be obtained after getting the opportunity” and “high rate of competition involved with it.” Spelling errors such as “competion” and “there” for “their” further affect clarity. Build a more precise vocabulary for choice and decision-making, and check spelling and common word partnerships.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “who” and “but,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some passages difficult to read. For example, “people this days are more independent then in the past” has problems with comparison and sentence form, while “the number of educated people are also increasing” has subject–verb disagreement. In “a person who really like to do something,” the verb does not agree with its subject, and several sentences run together without clear punctuation. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence boundaries; shorter, controlled sentences will help you express your ideas more clearly.
