IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The modern world is full of opportunities . We can creat so many choices in minutes. I agree with the the statement completely. We can start from choosing a profession and can continue to our eating , our drinking and to our simple daily routines.

To choose a career, my view about creating the possibility of doing something is very metaphysical. If someone wants to do something great in their lives, the universe helps them to achieve that. This is just like the law of attraction.

A person wants a career as a teacher, a scientist, a singer, a musician , a tailor, a doctor or an engineer. He can choose whatever he likes. A modern man even got the choice to eatablish his business. He can start from the ease of his own bedroom and even that can be expanded to the whole world from his own home.

My parents and elders talk about their food routine when they were young or children. They used to get a simple bread with some vegetables like onion or tomato on it. It was considered a luxury by them to have some oil or sugar on the bread. We got so many choices in food. We go to the market and we are welcomed by countless restaurants from locals to international. We get the choice to eat Asian, Arabic, Eastern or Western, Thai or Chinese, Italian or French and so on.

About clothing choices, the old time was so different. Fewer choices were there in dressing. We go to the changing room and find dozens of dresses and shoes. Then we select our favourite boots to wear with our favorite jeans and uppers. We apply our favorite or according to the occasion perfume. We look for matching accessories and then we get out of the dressing room.

So, we have a lot of choices in every aspect of life. We can wear on our choice, we can sleep and get up on our choice. We can play on our choice and we can live on our own choice.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: “I agree with the statement completely,” and the response stays focused on the abundance of modern choices. The examples about careers, food and clothing are relevant and help illustrate your view, particularly the contrast between your parents’ limited food options and today’s restaurants. However, the career paragraph shifts to the “law of attraction,” which does not clearly explain how having many choices supports your argument. Several examples are listed rather than developed, and the conclusion repeats the claim without weighing its effects or explaining why the range of choices is excessive. Develop fewer examples with clearer reasoning about their impact to address the task more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with separate paragraphs for careers, food and clothing, followed by a conclusion. This makes the main examples easy to identify, and phrases such as “My parents and elders” help introduce a comparison. However, progression between ideas is sometimes mechanical: the repeated pattern of “We can…” and “We get the choice…” makes the response feel like a list. The career paragraph’s discussion of the universe and the law of attraction also interrupts the argument’s development. Use clearer links to explain how each example supports your position, and make references more precise—for example, clarify who “He” refers to in the career paragraph. A more purposeful conclusion could synthesise the examples rather than repeat them.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “profession,” “countless restaurants,” “international,” “occasion” and “accessories,” which allows you to discuss several areas of everyday choice. Some expressions are also specific, such as “from locals to international” and the list of cuisines. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or awkward, as in “create so many choices,” “eatablish his business,” “uppers” and “wear on our choice.” Spelling slips such as “creat” and “eatablish” are noticeable, while repeated use of “choice” and “favorite” limits flexibility. Aim for more natural phrases such as “have a wide range of options” and check spelling and collocations during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and most of the message remains understandable. For example, the sentence beginning “A person wants a career as a teacher…” uses a list within a complete sentence, while the food paragraph includes a comparison with the past. However, grammatical control is uneven. Errors include “We can start… and can continue…” (parallel structure), “A modern man even got the choice” (verb form), and “We can wear on our choice” (sentence pattern). Articles and punctuation are also inconsistent, as in “the the statement” and the spacing before commas. Practise accurate verb forms and sentence patterns, and proofread for repeated words and punctuation. Greater control of these basics would make your varied ideas easier to follow.
