Student answer (Band 6.0)

The range of options available for individuals has increased significantly over the years. Having too many choices is not at all a disadvantage rather beneficial to lead a meaningful life. However, some believe having redundant alternatives often create confusion which results in bad decisions that can cause potential damage to life. The essay will discuss both views and explain why having wide variety of choice is ultimately beneficial.

If we firstly see the disadvantages, individuals having extra options in their life can face difficulties to figure out the best suited option which create unnecessary stress and confusion. As a result people often get into trouble in decision making which leads to affect badly in future. For example- university students get confused by picking up the right subject for their particular course out of 100 options. Therefore they might make wrong decision which affect their career in future.

On the other hand, having too many choices create wider access of picking the best out of all options after sound analysis. This lead to consider the range of options and allow individuals to select options that match with their preferences. For example-In the past people had limited career path but today there are numerous field and specializations to choose. The diversity enables people to select their preferential career options which lead to greater job satisfaction and improvement in professional life. Additionally, supermarkets provide wide range of products that encourages competition which can result better quality and lower consumer price.

In conclusion, having a wide range of options can be overwhelming sometimes that lead to stress, ultimately it is beneficial for people having enough options which can be selected based on their preferences. Therefore, having multiple choices in life should be considered as a positive development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: although too many options can cause stress, you ultimately consider choice beneficial. You address both sides and support your view with relevant examples, including students choosing subjects, career opportunities and supermarket competition. This meets the task well. However, some points are asserted more than explained: the student example says a poor choice may affect a career, but does not show why having many options makes that outcome likely or how people can make better decisions. The supermarket point is also brief and less directly connected to the broader question of life choices. Develop these links and explain your reasoning more fully to make the argument consistently convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for disadvantages and advantages, and a conclusion that restates your position. The contrast between the two main views is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. “If we firstly see the disadvantages” is an awkward opening, while “As a result” and “Therefore” sometimes introduce consequences without fully explaining the link. The conclusion also repeats the main point rather than drawing the argument together. Use clearer topic sentences and make each example’s connection to its claim explicit; vary linking expressions so the progression feels less formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “redundant alternatives,” “decision making,” “diversity,” “job satisfaction” and “competition.” These choices help express both the drawbacks and benefits of having many options, and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural word combinations, such as “best suited option,” “picking up the right subject,” “preferential career options” and “lower consumer price.” “Wide variety of choice” also needs more natural phrasing. These issues show that you are attempting varied vocabulary but do not always control collocation or word form. Learn useful phrases in context and choose precise, natural combinations rather than adding complexity where a simpler expression is clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “which,” “that” and “but,” and the overall meaning remains understandable. Some sentence patterns are controlled, such as “The diversity enables people to select…” However, errors in agreement and verb forms recur: “alternatives often create confusion” should be “alternatives often create confusion” only if the subject is plural, while “having too many choices create” needs “creates”; “This lead” needs “This leads.” Other examples include “which create unnecessary stress” and “which affect their career,” where the verb does not agree with its subject. Articles and sentence punctuation also need attention. Check each sentence’s subject and verb, and proofread for complete, correctly punctuated sentences to improve accuracy while retaining varied structures.
