Student answer (Band 4.5)

In today world of leisure, people are provided with multiple ways to relief themselves of their stresses, be it from their work or family. However, some people believe that "There are just too many choices nowadays". The matter on whether there are too many choices or not, spark quite a controversy among the population.

Before we give our answer to this topic, let's dive deep into this topic. Well, It is true that there are many choices that we can choose to enjoy ourselves. With today advanced technology, we can go skiing or ice skating in the middle of the summer, on the weekend. As the human technology developes, people find a way or another to create a space where they could enjoy their hobbies. Even without the advanced human technology and facility, people of same interest come together to create an opportunity to enjoy their shared hobbies.

However, these opportunities are not provided to each and every person equally. The percentage of opportunities may differs depending on the regions. People born and live in developing countries with less technology advancement may not be open to as much opportunities compare to the people in a more advanced state. In addition, in a society with less communication or communicational devices, people tend to get isolated from their peer hobbyist.

To give my own opinion to this topic, I would say that there may be many opportunities exist but not everyone is equally provided with e

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response is only partly successful in addressing the question. It discusses the availability of leisure activities and unequal access to them, but the task asks whether people nowadays have too many choices; the essay does not clearly explain whether this abundance is excessive or give a sustained answer to that point. The final sentence begins to state an opinion—“there may be many opportunities exist”—but is cut off, leaving the position and conclusion incomplete. Examples such as skiing or ice skating in summer are relevant to the range of activities, yet their connection to having too many choices is not developed. The response also falls six words short of the required minimum. State your degree of agreement directly, then support it with developed reasons and a complete conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation: the opening introduces the topic, the next paragraph discusses the range of leisure activities, and “However” signals a contrast about unequal access. These paragraph divisions and basic linking words help the reader follow the general direction. However, progression is limited because the discussion moves from choices to opportunities and access without clearly connecting these ideas to the question of whether there are too many choices. The opening phrase “Before we give our answer” promises a position that is not delivered, and the final paragraph is incomplete. Some wording is repetitive, including “topic” several times in the introduction. Build each paragraph around one clear reason, use references that make the argument’s links explicit, and finish with a conclusion that answers the question.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “advanced technology,” “developing countries,” “isolated,” and “shared hobbies.” These choices show an attempt to discuss both leisure options and unequal access. However, the range is limited by repeated general terms such as “choices,” “opportunities,” and “people,” and several word-choice or collocation errors make expressions awkward: “relief themselves of their stresses,” “technology advancement,” and “peer hobbyist.” Spelling and word-form slips such as “developes” and “communicational” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise language that distinguishes between options, access, and decision-making, and check collocations and word forms when editing. For example, “access to a wider range of activities” is clearer than repeatedly referring to “opportunities.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay attempts both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional-style contrast in “Even without the advanced human technology and facility…” and a relative clause in “people born and live in developing countries…”. However, errors occur frequently, and some sentences are difficult to interpret. Examples include “The matter … spark quite a controversy,” where the subject and verb do not agree, and “there may be many opportunities exist,” which combines incompatible verb structures. Other problems include “With today advanced technology” and “The percentage of opportunities may differs.” The final sentence is unfinished, further affecting accuracy. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and verb patterns, and keep complex sentences manageable. Proofread each sentence to ensure it has a complete and grammatically consistent structure.
