Student answer (Band 6.5)

The idea of people having too many options has been being seen negatively by many nowadays. I disagree with this because having more to choose from lets us evaluate all the options available and eventually choose the right one for ourselves.

Having too many choices in hand might feel overwhelming and unnecessary intially. However, testing various options before committing permanently allows us to decide the right one. For eample, choosing major in universities takes a toll on the students. If a student is not given the opportunity to test out all the subjects in the list, they might decide on going forward with something they might struggle to cope up with or not even enjoy. This results in dissatisfactory academic result, poor career prospect and even depression. On the other hand, having known all the options available, a fresher can easilty choose their major as per their own interest and future plan.

On the contrary, too many options might feel unnecessary when the topic being chosen is not a matter leaving long-term influence in ones' live. Such as, having limited options of flavours in an icecream shop might not affect one's life in the long run. Hence, too many options here seem excessive and indicate the chance of gluttony. For that, many people prefer having a small number of variety to choose from.

In conclusion, choosing the best among many should be a fundamental right when it comes to big decisions of life and can be considered when it comes to the smaller ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you disagree that people have too many choices, and the conclusion maintains this view while allowing that smaller decisions may need fewer options. The university-major example is relevant and explains how trying different subjects can help students make a better long-term decision. You also acknowledge the opposing point through the ice-cream example, so the response addresses both sides of the issue. However, the case for choice in major decisions is developed more fully than the point about everyday choices, and the claim that limited flavours indicate “the chance of gluttony” is not clearly connected to whether there are too many choices. Explaining that contrast more precisely would make the argument more consistently developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, the body paragraphs consider major and minor decisions, and the conclusion summarises your position. The progression from the university example to the ice-cream example is easy to follow, and phrases such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help signal shifts. At times, however, the links between ideas are mechanical or unclear. “On the contrary” does not quite express the relationship between the two body paragraphs, and “For that” does not clearly show how the preceding point leads to people preferring fewer choices. The reference to “the topic being chosen” is also vague. Use more precise transitions and make each paragraph’s central point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss choice and its consequences, including “overwhelming,” “committing permanently,” “long-term influence,” and “career prospect.” These choices help communicate the main argument, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word-choice and collocation problems reduce precision: “having too many choices in hand,” “takes a toll on the students,” and “a small number of variety” are not natural in these contexts. There are also spelling errors such as “intially,” “eample,” and “easilty,” alongside the misspelling “icecream.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations and proofread carefully; this would make your vocabulary more flexible and precise without changing your ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional forms (“If a student is not given the opportunity…”) and a contrastive sentence beginning “On the other hand.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. The opening phrase “has been being seen” uses an awkward passive construction; “has been viewed” would be more accurate. In “choosing major in universities,” the article and sentence structure need attention, while “they might struggle to cope up with” has an incorrect verb pattern. “In ones’ live” also shows problems with possessive form and number. Review articles, verb patterns, and possessives, and check punctuation around examples. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
