Student answer (Band 6.0)

Modern society provides countless choices in almost every aspect of life including education, employment, shopping and entertainment. It is widely argued that having too many options brings benefits while i contend that having multiple options can cause stress and confusion.

On the one hand, having number of choices let people choose according to their needs, preferance and budget. Consumer can compare different products wth prices and quality before purchasing the product. More products in the market and consumer choices led companies into competition result in lower prices and better quality. Moreover students can choice universities and suitable career path. For example, students can choose from numerous universities and academic programmes according to their interests and financial situations.

On the other hand, the argument against this view is that people often having different options make decision-making difficult. Indiviual are mostly confused and overwhelmed. They usually regret after making decision because they think another option would have been better which usually waste time. Too many career options create uncertainty between young students. For example, student struggle to choose the career path because of vast field of degrees and universities.

Although i recognise that having choices essential for personal growth and freedom. In human behaviour we always want better which led to social dilemma of choosing the best which eventually have negative effects. There should be reasonable balance between them.

In conclusion, i largely agree that modern society offers multiple choices. Even though it provides number of varieties and freedom but excessive options can cause stress, anxiety and depression. Therefore drawbacks of this should not be overlooked.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you recognise the benefits of choice but largely agree that excessive options can create stress and confusion. You address both sides with relevant examples, including consumers comparing products and students choosing universities or careers. This gives the response a sound basis and covers the task. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the claim that people regret decisions and waste time would be stronger with a brief explanation of how too many alternatives lead to that outcome. The conclusion also introduces “anxiety and depression” without developing these effects earlier. To strengthen the response, extend the main ideas with specific reasoning and keep the discussion focused on the extent of your agreement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, contrasting body paragraphs, a qualification, and a conclusion. “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help signal the two perspectives, and the examples generally follow the points they illustrate. The overall progression is understandable, but some links are mechanical and a few transitions are unclear. The paragraph beginning “Although i recognise…” is a fragment-like concession followed by a broad statement, so its relationship to the preceding argument is not fully clear. The conclusion also repeats the idea of multiple choices rather than neatly synthesising the position. Use clearer links between claims and explanations, and make the concession a complete sentence that connects directly to your main argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “consumer,” “competition,” “overwhelmed,” “uncertainty,” and “personal growth.” These terms allow you to discuss both the practical benefits and psychological costs of choice. There are also attempts at more precise phrasing, such as “decision-making” and “financial situations,” though some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “having number of choices,” “choice universities,” and “social dilemma of choosing the best.” Spelling errors such as “preferance,” “wth,” and “Indiviual” also reduce accuracy. Aim to learn common word partnerships and check spelling carefully; for example, use “a range of choices,” “choose universities,” and “the dilemma of choosing the best option.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “Even though” and a relative clause in “which usually waste time.” This shows some range, and the main message remains understandable. However, errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms occur in several places. For example, “having number of choices let people” needs an article and subject–verb agreement, while “people often having different options make decision-making difficult” has a faulty clause structure. The sentence beginning “Although i recognise…” is incomplete, and “which usually waste time” does not agree with its intended reference. Review articles, agreement, complete clause structure, and punctuation, then proofread complex sentences to ensure each has a clear subject and verb.
